Man stabbed to death at Roxbury bus stop

DrogbaUPDATE: Arrest made.

A Dorchester man became Boston's fifth murder victim since Saturday when he was fatally stabbed in an argument at a route-23 bus stop in Roxbury this afternoon.

Friends have identified him as Rashad "Rizzy" Barnes, 25.

Brian D'Amico reports the victim was getting off a bus at Warren and Kearsarge streets around 2:45 p.m. when he was stabbed by another man also getting off the bus. The stop is a short walk from both the B-2 police station and Roxbury District Court.

Ironically, just yesterday, Barnes tweeted:

in HP bout to ball later so anywhere is homicide.

Friends say goodbye.

Charlie Wood reports she was on the bus and saw the stabbing:

I've lived here exactly 1 month and was on the bus with my 2 and 4 yr olds. Boston is straight up scaring me & I'm from Detroit.

In a series of tweets, she described what turned out to be Barnes's death:

This was the stop on the 23 going twds Dudley just before the bus crosses Washington. They exited bus, saw guy drop knife then pick it up and run to stab victim in neck, then kept at it prison-style, repeatedly stabbed holding onto victim, they bumped against the bus, 1/2way down the blk - seemed premeditated. Victim staggered across st. covered in blood leaned against bldg, sat down -strong for someone fatally injured!

Don't worry - the Mayor for Life is protecting you from homophobic chicken sandwiches.

You're right, it's the mayors fault that stupid ass kids stab each other. (sarcasm font)

Stop being a clown. For the record, the murder rate in Boston has decreased significantly since Menino became mayor, and is also significantly lower than murder rates in similarly sized cities throughout the country.

But yeah, it's all his fault.

Terrible...however, I'm not sure if I understand what he tweeted? Was he expecting a murder to occur?

No he was a Basketball player! he wasnt involved in no violence or any of the sort. he danced he lived and he had fun........... When he said HOMOCIDE HE WAS REFERRING TO BEATING PEOPLE IN A GAME OF BALL. He didnt deserve this senseless act he was about more. GETTING MONEY AND LIVING LIFE...... AND THAT WAS HIS WAY OF LIFE

He meant that he was going to the ball court to "murder" people in basketball. As in he planned to play really well. When you play really well people can say "you are killing it". Therefore, the homicide he refers too is completely basketball related and just showed that he intended on having a really good workout. R.I.P Rizz

he was going to play ball ....homocide police were everywhere (probably due to the recent murders of the 3 girls) ....he was probably leery about going to whatever park he played ball at...

RIP no one deserves to die on the streets because of an argument on a bus.

I pray for the surviving family and friends of Mr. Drogba. This is not acceptable. We the people of Boston must get involved to prevent violence and promote peace. People are desperate. These times we are living in are desperate. Unless we pull together and require a commitment to this issue, things will only get worse. I am committed to do my part, what about you?

Can we start judging people. Can we start letting people in the hood know that this is not acceptable anymore. This, the 3 girls, the other shooting that dont make the news.

Rashad Barnes worked at Brigham and Women's Hospital (where I work). Yesterday afternoon I passed a man in the basement hallway who was being escorted outside. By the sounds he was making I thought he was laughing. But I soon realized he was crying; kept screaming 'they killed my boy'.

I just read this article and pieced the two together. Looked up Barnes in our directory and there he is. We generally receive hospital-wide email broadcasts when someone meets an untimely death-- car accidents and what not. I would like to know why Barnes' death has not been announced hospital-wide.

Because he was low on the totem pole here?
Because it was a stabbing?
Why?

I want to know why Universal Hub was able to identify the victim but the Boston Globe didn't bother.

Somebody sent me a link to his Facebook page, which gave me his nickname, which led me to friends saying goodbye on Twitter, confirming the initial person who contacted me was right (although I did initially get his last name wrong, alas).

Adam Gaffin practices investigative journalism, the Globe does not.

This site is the only place where I was able to get any details about what happened. The news items at boston.com are never very helpful, and the comments are totally useless. Every story has the same comments, from the same 7 people regardless of what the story is about. On top of that lots of comments have to removed (for good reason).
I will keep coming back here from now on.

Give it a few for the news to get out, my lord!!!!

Dear Colleagues:

Our hearts are filled with deep sadness today upon learning that our colleague Rashad Barnes, of Central Transport Services, died yesterday, a victim of tragic violence in Roxbury. Just 24 years old, Rashad has been a member of the BWH community since July of 2006, when he began his employment as a transporter, working both during the week and on weekends. He was also a star player for the Central Transport basketball team.

Rashad was respected and admired by everyone he worked with and came in contact with. Central Transport has not only lost a colleague, but a true friend, in Rashad. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his mother, Pauline Barnes, who is also a Brigham employee and his family.

Funeral services are not complete at this time. We will share those details when they are available.

During difficult times like these, when violence occurs in our city and we suffer tragic loss, I want to remind you that there are strong supports available through the Employee Assistance Program, a free and confidential resource for all our employees. Please feel free to call them at 617-732-6017. Managers can contact the EAP as well to consult with a counselor about the needs of your staff.

I would also would like to mention that there are other BWH resources available for assistance. These include: Chaplaincy at 617-732-7480 and beeper #11724, 24-hours-a-day; Social Work at 617-732-6469; Department of Psychiatry at 617-732-6750; and our Center for Community Health and Health Equity at 617-264-8750.
May we look to each other for strength and support during this time of grief for the loss felt by the Brigham and Women’s community. Please keep the family, friends and close colleagues of Rashad in your thoughts and prayers, now and in the days ahead.

Perhaps because administration was providing support to his mother (who is also a BWH employee) and other family members before making a public announcement?

An e-mail went out at 6:48 last night announcing this horrible situation. What is going on in our city? My 4 year old son goes to preschool right down the street from this madness and we live in Dorchester and sometimes have to commute and take bus to ashmont. This is extremely frightening what the world is coming to, especially for my son's generation. Everyone thinks they need to be so tough and macho but guess what...death is forever...

The 23 bus stopped at the bus stop at 90 Warren street right where the W.I.L.D. radio station use to be. I was about a block away on the same side as that bus stop. I seen when it appeared that two people were fighting as the bus door openned. The person in the front, later known as the victim, was leaning forward as the second person behide the victim was striking the victim with what I thought was punches from behind. The victim tried to and was successful in running towards the middle of Warren st toward the center isle, while the person continued to follow and to swing in a wild and unhumanly motion coming down on the neck, shoulder chest area of the victim. The bus pulled off and the suspect ran down the street next to the Urban league. The victim got up and ran towards the Library area where some men were playing a game of chest and calapst. The suspect killed the victim in cold blood and the first stab was in the neck! This is a prison style move where a prisoner would have a less sharp object, like a pencil, pen or pointed object to kill another! In the neck is an intention to kill and I seen this suspect swing exclusively to the neck area. I did not see the knife but I seen the blood flying and I knew the victim was being stabbed not punched. The suspect was like an animal chasing pray and was liking it! The suspect was jumping around stabbing the victim fucking mad man! The victim did not get one swing in and was trying to save his own life! I followed the path of the victim as I ran towards where the victim went and I never seen so much blood in m entire life. The victim was pouring out blood and fighting for his life. No police,No ambulance, just a shocked community cryig and screaming while this young man bleed to death before our eyes! It seemed we all felt hopless and helpless and there were children out there as well. I heard the victi say "I dont want to die!". The police showed first, could not do anything but tell the victim to hold on. It seemed that the vcitim died more than once and was able to come back. He told the police officer "don't let me die!" He was strong and he was aware. His blood covered an entire block and the animal that did it was loose in our community. To see this young man die before our eyes was not just a wake up call, but a new passion for our community to assist in gettng these crimes punished and justice served! People on the scene was angry and helped the police with the details. Nobody was afraid to cooperate on the scene and I am confident that he suspect will be caught and punished! This is not a police issue, a Maor issue, or an individual issue. Its a community issue and if we want it to stop we must do our part. Lets not what until it's our son, daughter or other love one. Lets send the message that this is not how want our community. I did not know thw victim but I now have a personal connection. I too was a victim that day and so was our community!! I cant sleep and have problems with being around our young black men. I can trust anymore.
