Guy with water bottle, fists of fury, gets all road ragey in Dorchester

A Reddit user reports on an incident that began on Morrissey Boulevard around 6:40 p.m. and ended on Neponset Avenue with an obese white guy in glasses first throwing a water bottle at his car, then smashing his windshield and mirror with his fists and threatening to shoot him:

Basically, this guy driving in my blind spot and I accidentally cut him off. He flew into a rage, stopped his car in front of mine, held up traffic. People were beeping, he's fuckin screaming and shit. So I get around him, and he follows my car, throws a water bottle at my car, cussing, screaming, telling me to "Get outta the fahkin cah and let's fahkin handle this." Finally I get to a red light, and he starts kicking and punching my car. Breaks the windshield, and the passenger-side mirror. Mind you, I've barely said anything. I used to have a pretty bad temper, so I'm trying to stay calm, and stay inside the car. Light turns green, I drive off, he's behind me. Some lady yells that she's calling the police, and he turns off onto a side street.

That's why you turn and look before changing lanes. I hope someone got his plate.

You don't "accidentally" cut someone off. And, while his reaction was pure masshole douchebag, you should consider learning to drive.

Your car doesn't drive itself while you text and drink coffee - SWIVEL YOUR DAMN NECK. I realize you probably weren't taught that when you got your MA license, but DO IT.

Yeah, and the guy who's hovering in the blind spot, presumably waiting for a chance to pass on the right at high speed, doesn't deserve a single iota of blame!

Sorry. There is no blind spot. Only lousy drivers making excuses for driving habits that kill people.

It isn't the other driver's job to "guess" where you won't bother to look. It is your job to drive your car competently or get the hell off the road before you kill somebody.

Uh there most definitely is a blind spot, but smart drivers will always check to make sure there isn't a car hanging out in it.

The even smarter driver knows that other cars have blind spots and drive in a manner where they don't hang out in them.

it's called defensive driving.

Yes, it is the other driver's "job" not to hang out in the spot where he will be least-visible. Pass, or fall back. It ain't rocket science.

Yes, because if you cut someone off you should have your car attacked and your life threatened. Some people...

This is how cyclists and motorcyclists get killed all the time by idiot drivers.

Just because they happened to endanger a car-clad sociopath with their fundamental lack of driving skills this time doesn't change the fact that this driver can't even understand that they did something wrong and dangerous ... or how not to do it!

Yeah "they were in my blind spot so it isn't my fault". Right.

Oh, please. I keep an eye out for motorcycles but most people who drive them get themselves killed. Driving from NYC to Boston last night I was passed by about 20 insane motorcyclists over the course of the 4 hour drive, splitting lanes and going 100mph+ at 10 pm. If you're driving a vehicle where you can easily die, don't drive it in someone's blind spot.

Ohh you ride a bike all the time dont you??? you are so adamant and rude your sense of graduated sense of self worth as a bike rider must be hard to fit inside your inflated head. WE all have to get along in this world. Stop trying to blame everyone else. and god bless you for riding a bike and having an uppity attitude you are surely changing the world

The right to kill people by not knowing what the rules and skills are.

Exhibit A, above.

hi! another bike rider here (not person who posted above) - I do it because it costs me $140 a month to park at the office and the T trip is well over an hour with 3 transfer. I'm not trying to change the world - I'm trying to save some money and time so I can spend more of both on my family.

so - please be nice to me out there - and I'll be nice to you.

sincerely,

cyclist in roslindale

Nobody has said that drivers do not have a responsibility to check their blind spot, but DEFENSIVE DRIVING (remember that? You might have learned about it when you were in High School?) dictates that you do everything in your power to avoid an accident even if the person in front of you doesn't check their blind spot. Unless you'd rather be "right" than avoid an accident, in which case you're the one who needs to stay the fuck off the roads.

If you cause an accident because you don't understand a basic driving skill like "don't change lanes without checking for a car you can't see in the mirror", your insurer won't give two bowel movements about "but but he was in my BLIND SPOT".

You will be paying for the accident for years. That's because you are at fault for the accident if you changed lanes without looking.

It is that simple.

That's because it is the lane-changing or turning driver's responsibility to look for other vehicles.

It is that simple.

You do know that "blind spot" originally meant "place you couldn't see" not "place my mirrors don't show when I'm too lazy to look", right? If you got your license from the RMV Crackerjack Box, I'd bet not.

In a lot of cars you can adjust your mirrors so that there is no blind spot. Its also not hard to look quickly before you merge over and also to pay attention to whats around you so that you can anticipate a car being in your blind spot ( for instance if you pass a silver car and you dont see it anymore it is most likely in your blind spot). Driving is very easy and it's incredibly important to do it safely. The amount of people who text and drive, speed unnecessarily and are simply oblivious to their surroundings is absolutely ridiculous. If more people ate pizza while they were driving this nonsense wouldn't happen and they wouldn't be hungry when they arrived at their destination.

Although I would say that you need some training or need to get off the road if you don't even understand such a fundamental driving skill.

And trying using your turn signal even!

I like how everyone is arguing about his driving, and the rules of the road, and completely disregarding the fact that this man damaged his property, and threatened to shoot him. "Well it wouldn't have happened if he could DRIVE!" Yeah, well guess what? It did happen, and the way the angry driver reacted was very poor. Stop trying to justify a lunatic's actions.

Come on you really think, all this happened because he "just accidentally cut him off'?

Someone will go this insane if you made a mistake and said i am sorry? No what more than likely happened, this douche cut him off because he did not want to wait in line like everyone else (happens all the time in this city) and then when the other guy beeped rolled down the window and showed him the middle finger. Now that would probably cause a troubled person to go insane. When have you heard of a similar story of someone simply being cut off. I have heard a few when after an injustice was done to them were further antagonized, and that would cause them to crack.

I think is very naive believing this guys story. Might not be right, but I am sure he will think twice before cutting people off now.

Believe it or not, no I did not flip him off. I didn't even swear at him. He pulled up on the side of me and guess what? I said, "Sorry, it was an accident." He was not having any of that, and told me, "You know what? I don't think it was an accident." I did not cut this man off on purpose. I have more sense than that, not to mention, I was driving my Dad's car, so I'm even more careful with my driving, as not to damage his property. There was no line, I was simply trying to switch lanes, and this man sped up in an attempt to get past me before I could switch. Of course, you don't have to believe me, and that's your prerogative, but you weren't there, and this is what happened. Not once during this incident did I insult this man. Sorry I don't live up to your expectation of the 'Aggressive Boston Driver.'

Just learn to merge , practice everyday so you won't fk up. You don't blame a snake for biting you, you blame yourself for not being more careful. Ppl like that driver are all around and we can't get rid of em all

People used to not even have mirrors, but they still learned to change lanes.

They did it by turning and looking!

The mirrors were intended to cover blind spots WHEN TURNING And LOOKING. They were NEVER intended to be the primary means of checking for clearance.
