Police say bystanders wrestle knife-wielding mugger to the ground in Brighton

Boston Police report a pair of good Samaritans broke up an armed robbery on Comm. Ave. early this morning - and then held the suspect on the ground until officers arrived.

According to police, a man was walking on Comm. Ave. near South Street around 2:45 a.m. when another man ran right at him with a knife in his hand and ordered him to hand over his money.

Good Samaritans witnessed the victim struggling with the suspect and came to his aide. Police recovered a knife at the scene.

Marques Holman, 26, of Dorchester, was arraigned today in Brighton District Court on a charge of armed robbery with a knife, police say. A judge set bail at $10,000, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.

Innocent, etc.

See, we don't have the information to know if the bail was reasonable, because bail depends on the seriousness of the crime only indirectly, in that all other things being equal, someone facing the possibility of, say, a 10 year prison term if convicted is more likely to skip trial than someone facing, say a 30 day sentence. But all other things are seldom equal: of two people charged with exactly the same crime, the one who owns a house and has lived on the same block for 30 years and has all his extended family in town is less likely to skip trial the person of no fixed address, and so, even though the crimes are the same, the bail is likely to be very different.
