they found it more important to bust 4 people for drinking in a Chinatown restaurant at 2:30am.

Yeah, it was a real shame that the BPD's only two detectives were doing that Chinatown thing. I mean, considering that an urban police department can't handle more than one crime per day, you'd think they'd prioritize a bit better.

I'm sure JPNative617 has some illuminating, tangible, realistic pointers, and isn't just making some populist noise.

If you want to get away with murder, or let off a handgun withing 100 yards of a middle school come to grove hall. Im a 22 year old resident in the neighborhood and if theres something ive realized is that the police dont give a shit about what happens in this community, they follow up on one case, or catch one bad guy to make themseleves seem like they are doing their job, but they are not. I KNOW people in this community who have gotten away with shootings and murders and live freely and they even reep the benefits of welfare, food stamps, and all of that cops dont give a fuck. Boston strong is a hunk of shit that only white people in the south end believe. Come to Grove Hall, or Mattapan and its a free for all. I dont care what counter comment anyone posts i dont give a shit about your views. I live here, i was born and raised here in grove hall so no one from hyde park or newbury st can tell me shit about the current situation in this community. COME TO THE WARZONE!!

Well the, why the hell didn't you talk to the police? There's only so much they can do when they're always greeted with hateful stares and a bunch of "I ain't seen nothin."

Well the, why the hell didn't you talk to the police?

Did you miss the part about "The cops don't give a flying fuck"?

Voting closed 0

And how exactly do you know that? Have you had BPD take a survey? BPD detectives would LOVE to solve all those murder cases (mostly for selfish reasons like raises and promotions, not because they care,) but no one is talking to them. Can't solve a case/get a criminal locked up if you have no witnesses.

Who on here has ever been a witness to a murder/violent crime and reported said murder/violent crime to the authorities? Yall are speaking from a place that reveals little interaction with the law. Retribution is real. When you can't move away from violence for whatever reason (and there are a lot of reasons) you make a decision that sucks. You keep living by not talking about how other people died. The criminal justice system is without justice. Its just another system.

If the NSA has taught us anything, its that nothing is anonymous. Especially when a case rests on your testimony.

Let's focus on prevention more and less about the should'ves/could'ves from an audience who appears, or at least talks, like they have no experience in this matter.

Cops can't solve crimes alone. They rely on witnesses and tips/ info from people in the community. When people KNOW criminals and murderers living in the community and don't say anything, you can't just blame the cops.
In my neighborhood, if there is any suspicious activity, the cops are called. My neighbors look out for eachother, nosy at times, but I am thankful.
The problem isn't just the cops that you claim "don't give a shit about the community" the community needs to care and be proactive.

Forget you and your community buddy, people in these communities arent quick to be "proactice" and call the cops or cooperate with the cops because THEY HAVE TO LIVE HERE MORON!!! Im sure if they were offered to be relocated to your community after cooperating with the police more people would but no they are left here to deal with the stigma of being snitches which in this community is deadly and even when someone knows a killer or a shooter for lack of evidence or whatever reason that person will still be free to roam the streets, and a person being proactive will be left in the same community with the shooters and killers and they will become the next topic on universal hub like many of my friends and people i grew up with

You don't have to walk around with a sign that says "I'm a snitch". You can report anonymously. I am not a moron. Also, I live in Dorchester. "THEY HAVE TO LIVE HERE", should be more of an incentive to improve the community, take some pride. Not sit around and blame the cops. The cops can't change the community alone. The community members need to be involved.

How do you know what cases they follow up on? You don't. Sociology 101 will tell you that the police have little effect on crime. Look in the mirror and change yourself and/or get educated. If your that scared, move to Worcester. It's cheaper and safer, and no one is forcing you to live anywhere.

So you want the police to turn into super-powered mindreaders? Got it. Until that happens, you'll just have to suck it up (and by "it" I mean your bigotted, cowardly attitude) and drop a dime anonymously.

Via BPDnews:
"Community members wishing to assist ... anonymously can do so by calling the CrimeStoppers Tip Line at 1 (800) 494-TIPS or by texting the word ‘TIP’ to CRIME (27463)."

There's a whole webpage dedicated to FAQs for the Text-a-Tip program, which has seen a steady increase in use (even discounting the spike after the marathon bombings) since it was established a couple years ago. The BPD claim that several dozen felony arrests per year are due to anonymous tips from the program.

If you'd be willing to give it 15 seconds' thought, it might occur to you that criminals can often figure out who is likely to have dimed them out, even when it's done anonymously.

do you live, Mr know-it-all social justice crusader? Back Bay? Beacon Hill? Seaport? Have you been watching re-runs of The Wire lately?

Unless you are claiming that this 'Grove Hall' anon is part of some inner circle of criminals (and his/her posts certainly don't seem to make that claim), then how would the bad guys know which of the dozens/hundreds of community members aware of these apparently 'open secrets', sent the cops a tip? Or even that a tip was sent? All he has to do is text a few sentences to the tip line and then keep his mouth shut - which apparently he's pretty good at.

The commenter slammed the police, people in other neighborhoods, and people with different skin color. It seems everyone but the persons with knowledge of who has done these alleged crimes is apparently responsible for the criminals getting away with murder.

Riiiight.

Records exist of what calls went where. I get a list of them on my monthly cell phone bill when I call abroad (one word, not two). I also get a list of calls I make to 411. If those exist, what makes you think the others don't? What's also stopping someone from taking another person's cell phone, and going through their history. We hear stories of people losing cell phones all of the time through theft. The MBTA even had a public notice campaign on the very subject for a while.

Pointing someone out as the person of interest is very dangerous, and a good reason for why we have witness intimidation laws:

Erase the Tip line call or text from your phone. Then hope the criminal you dimed out doesn't ask you for a copy of your phone bill.

The could hack into your MetroPCS account. They could have an informant working for BPD who would rat you out. Heck, they can just anally torture you with a hot soldering iron until you admit you snitched. The possibilities are limitless, just like your ability to make up excuses for harmful antisocial behavior.

look what you don't know is people will know u told. an old lady from around my way called and gave a tip on someone that committed a crime that person was released and had a paperwork with the women's name and her statement. i know people in jail right now with papers of everyone that tip the police off. i hear you on the community needs to stand up and do something but like my man said whose gonna protect or community when a mother or father cant come on the porch because people be shooting is there a police cruiser around to keep them safe no. the only time they come around is 5 min later after a person been shot or stabbed. they don't care about our community that's why they don't live in the community.

Yet there are witnesses that won't snitch, and that's not a problem at all?

Just saying.

Are you saying people who call the cops in Lmo's communitydon't actually live in that community? As in, a guy who sees a drug dealer parked on the street corner next to his house and calls the cops doesn't actually live in that house? Last time I checked it was quite the contrary - those who "HAVE TO LIVE THERE" (i.e. homeowners and long-term renters) actually care about their communities and call the cops when they witness any sort of criminal activity in their neighborhood. I'm confused, to say the least.

Also, you have a much bigger problem on your hands than the allegedly indifferent cops when anybody who reports a crime is labeled as a "snitch" in your community. It's a fairly common assumption that a vast majority of the residents are law-abiding citizens, with criminals making up a very small percentage - are you telling us it's the other way around? Only a criminal wouldn't want people reporting crimes and cooperating with police.

You are both right: the cops don't treat crimes in Dot, Roxbury, Mattapan the same way they handle them in other parts, AND people in these neighborhoods are less likely to cooperate as witnesses than in other parts.

But Lmo, you fail to consider WHY people tend to fear cooperating with the police. To cooperate with the police is risking one's own life without any guarantee of protection. If you lived in a warzone, you would understand that the cops are not able to save you 24-7, and they probably won't figure out who murdered you either.

I grew up in Charlestown in the 80s-90s, lived in Roxbury, in the heart of H-Block in 2007-2011, and now am back in Charlestown. I am a white male. I have had to deal with cops in both neighborhoods regarding non-violent and violent crimes. I have seen both sides of the coin up close and personal. I also lived in various neighborhoods of Washington, D.C and San Juan, Puerto Rico. This phenomenon happens in every city.

I do not fail to consider why people may fear to cooperate with police. There are many reasons why people do not report crimes; from fear of retaliation to plain ol' "f the police" I have had to report crimes in the past that I was not comfortable with and was concerned about my safety. Sooo, I reported the crimes in a way, that I would not put myself out there and be exposed as the crime reporter.
I am not saying it is easy to live in these neighborhoods and deal with these issues. But, to sit back and blame cops for the problems in a neighborhood is ridiculous. Come up with some ideas to improve the community, instead of complaining. Attend neighborhood meetings, be present in the community, and make the environment uncomfortable for the criminals. Not saying these will all work, nut nothing will change if nothing changes.

try helping the police with useful info so they can make your neighborhood a safer place

Im not going to become product of my environment i want my environment to be a product of me. Im enlightened enough by everything ive lived to know that hard work, dedication, and education is the way out of these communities, i will continue to het a college education and eventually move myself and my family from this community. And hopefuly be affluent enough to help out the community i came from so that other young people dont become product of this environment. The police isnt the answer they dont help shit. Have a nice day everyone i just wanted to vent.

For all of those nice and safe in the burbs open your mind up, for those like me who have no choice but to live in these communities its not simple to "cooperate" with police or to just move away.

So your answer is to do nothing, reject all input from others, pass the blame to others who don't live in your neighbourhood who have no firsthand knowledge of the situation like you do and complain on the internet. Gotcha. Really going places here.

not helping the police = you're helping the criminals

Not all poor neighborhoods are crime ridden cesspools because the residents care about their communities and work with the authorities and each other to keep them safe.

Dorchester guy here. Why don't you stay and try to make the neighborhood better, instead of leaving it? You just let the bad guys win. You seem to have Departed already.

Why should the police care if the community doesn't care about justice being served?

Conversely, if, when someone is shot, no one would help the police doing their job, wouldn't that indicate that there is no desire for the police to do anything?

So, either hope the police are able to do their job or don't care if the police do their job, but don't gripe that the police not doing anything if you don't care if the police do anything.

I'm a white man with a black woman live in an apartment building in Mattapan have experienced losing people to Murder I've been stabbed and a lot of my friends have been shot I don't blame police for excuses off others soo when you talk shit about white people over the internet like a coward we are not all alike I have some opinions of blacks or should I say facts but I I'm not ignorant enough to think you all are the same but hearing you might be proving me wrong.

It is so awful that children in Roxbury Dorchester and Mattapan live in the reality that they do. Apathy has set in. The police can do very little when judges let people walk and there are few willing witnesses to testify. The retaliatory violence is a huge factor. I don't think we even know half of what is going on. Years ago a prosecutor was executed for pursuing a case.

Children in Roxbury, Mattapan and Dorchester suffer the most as a result of these conditions, but the entire communities in question, at large, suffer as well. It's true that there are very few witnesses who are willing to cooperate and talk to the cops and other people in law-enforcement, and it's also true that retaliatory violence is a tremendous (in fact, the main factor) in most people's refusal to cooperate.
