I still think that later closing times are a bad idea. What happens at 2am now, will just have more (meaning multiple instances) at 4am.
I know it's a big scary world. I am cowering in my abode, fearful of progress and the march of time.
Have a nice evening everyone!

Then how come NYC has lower crime rates than Boston?

That later closing times leads to more of this? What about the rest of New York State? It's not just NYC that has 4am closing times. Long Island, Syracuse, Buffalo, Saratoga all close at 4am and it's not anarchy on the streets. What's the worst that happens if Boston went 4am and turned ugly? You roll back to 2am? On that note, if 2am is so bad, what time should bars close? Midnight? 11? 9?

Who exactly is whipping out their cell phone to film a stabbing at 2 am?

The same sort of people who whip out their cell phone to video bouncers beating people on Canal Street.
