Police: Charlestown teen packed some beer and a loaded gun for the Puerto Rican Festival

Boston Police report arresting a 16-year-old yesterday after they say officers found his backpack was full of beer and a gun loaded with five rounds.

Police say officers' attention was drawn to three teens drinking what appeared to be beer in Big Gulp cups around 3:40 p.m. at City Hall Plaza:

When officers called the individuals over to check for proper identification, one of the individuals stated that he was 16 years old and that he had been drinking beer mixed with Red Bull. The suspect was also carrying a back pack which contained more beer. When officers removed the back pack to confiscate the alcohol, they discovered a silver firearm loaded with five rounds of ammunition.

The teen was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm with an altered serial number and drinking in public.

I saw 5 or 6 cops in the main part of the plaza, but none on the other side of City Hall. It was a little scary walking to the State Street T at the end of the festival -- groups of rowdy kids were throwing things at each other.

I survived just fine. But if things had turned nasty, as it looked like they might, it would have been nice to have a police presence.
