Armed robbery at Wood Island T stop

Transit Police are looking for a white guy in his 50s who used a knife to rob a woman of a gold chain in the Wood Island busway shortly after noon today.

He was wearing sunglasses, a green jacket, blue ball cap and bandana and was last seen heading up Bennington towards Orient Heights.

There are sometimes sketchy characters at Wood island, but seldom are they waiting for the Blue Line train. They are invariably outside where the buses are that go Chelsea and Revere.

Which station in the entire system has the most crime? My guess would be Forest Hills.

Would be for Ashmont, or maybe Fields Corner

Ashmont gets my vote. Ashmont has always been sketchy. I live closest to Ashmont, but I walk a few extra blocks to Shawmut. Shawmut is probably the most mellow stop on the Red Line, at least it's the most mellow stop in Dorchester for sure. I would guess that it is also one of the least used. Hardly anybody I know even knows where it is. Fields Corner isn't sketchy like Ashmont, I don't think. Sometimes I get off at Fields Corner if I want to pick up some Chinese takeout or stop in the Blarney Stone for a couple brews. Fields Corner doesn't seem sketchy like Ashmont, just crowded.

I believe it's actually Downtown Crossing. Stations with higher traffic have the most crime. Ashmont, Downtown Crossing, Park Street, Dudley Square, South Station, Central Square, Ruggles, Forest Hills are usually the ones. Ashmont crimes usually happen just outside of the station. Most recent shooting was across the street. Same with Fields Corner. Most shit goes down on Charles Street, behind the station. Shawmut shit usually goes down on that walkway to Melville Ave. Witnessed three robberies one summer there. Shots went off on Lyndhurst one time while I was walking home, and a motorcycle flew past me from the scene.

Per passenger or # of incidents total?

Forest Hills. 64 reported crimes in 2014, thus far. Ashmont comes in with 40-something.

Crime Stats

There isn't a listing; you have to click on each station individually. I didn't check some that would seem not in the running, such as Capen Street or Valley Road, so if you think those might be the big crime areas, check 'em yourself :-)

Also, a curious note: Downtown Crossing comes in at ZERO reported crimes. I have to think that's wrong.

P.S. Wood Island comes in at four reported crimes.

Someone I know moves between begging and robbing. Her partner doesn't always recognize me, which is weird because I've given him money.

Does anybody know what happened the crazy night last week of the guy on the motorbike with the machete up by the highschool around 1am last week?

Hey, just curious, when people use the term "sketchy" here, what is it code for?

Code for people of "sketchy" character:

Crackheads
Tweakers
Addicts
Winos
Thugs
Drug Dealers
Pimps
Whores
Thieves
Pervs
Hustlers
Beggars
Gang members

If any of those people hang around an area it is "sketchy" because something bad might happen to you being around those types of people.

Sketchy describes places where you don't feel entirely safe, but you can usually make it through okay if you're alert. A lot of them are safe during the day or rush hour, and not so safe at other times.

The Minuteman Bikeway alongside Thorndike Field in Arlington is sketchy; there have been muggings during dawn-n-dusk. I used to park my bike at Alewife and T-in (when I lived in West Somerville); I wouldn't have willingly walked home from there.

Central Square Cambridge in the 80s was sketchy. Central Square got gentrified; I'd happily work down there after 8 nowadays :)

Wood Island's busway has always felt slightly unsafe, but I stopped having to go there in the 90's.

"Wood Island's busway has always felt slightly unsafe"

Depends on what you mean by "always". I have used Wood island Station at all hours of the day and night since the early 70s, including when it was the old bunker type station with a long, dim enclosed busway, and never did it feel the slightest bit unsafe until relatively recent years. Now there are indeed sketchy or questionable people, some of whom are drunk or strung out, at the busway, but it's still reasonably safe. There are also a lot of tourists waiting for a shuttle that takes them to hotels on Route 1. That's something you didn't see in the 70s either.

I use Wood Island Station frequently. It is kinda sketchy because its near nothing. It sits squished between the Airport service road (and Sky Chefs), a future park, Bennington Street, and 1A. There's only a small neighborhood on one side. On Weekends the station is virtual empty (no attendant) and it more is there for the two infrequent weekend buses that run (120 and 112) and people walking to it from Day Square.

Scary that it happened during the day.

Wood Island Station is actually in a densely packed residential neighborhood. It's all on one side though, the other side being the nether parts of the airport.
