Student at Brighton school arrested with gun, police officer bit

UPDATE: Around 3:35 p.m., Boston Police broke up what appeared to be a brewing altercation related to the earlier incident at Comm. Ave. and Warren - where they also stopped a Green Line trolley in search of somebody on the train. Police arrested several teens.

School Police today detained a student at the Boston Green Academy, 20 Warren St., after they found him with a gun around 2:20 p.m. The school was put in safe mode until Boston Police arrived to take custody of both him and the gun.

Police requested two ambulances, one for somebody with a dislocated knee, one for an officer who was bitten.

The school's headmaster robocalled parents this afternoon:

Good afternoon. This is Matt Holzer, Headmaster of Boston Green Academy, calling with an important update for all Boston Green Academy students and families. This afternoon our building was put into safe mode to ensure the safety of all students and staff while we investigated an incident. All students and staff are fine and had a normal dismissal, and everyone performed exceptionally well. Following the search of a student, a firearm was recovered. The student was immediately arrested and removed from the building. At no time was anyone in danger and our school police, Boston Police, staff and students all did exactly what they were supposed to do. I am very proud of how everyone acted and came together to support each other. The safety of our students is our highest priority and we will review this issue as a community in the coming days with Boston public schools and the police. We will follow up with a letter to all families tomorrow. If you have any questions at all, please call the school office at 617-635-9860. Thank you again for your support and care for our students. We will continue to make sure our school is a safe and supportive place for them all.

The gun was loaded. An upstanding student gave staff the heads up.

Everyone did exactly what they should've done in response to this incident. BGA survived a very serious test.

An officer subdued the suspect and kept him restrained. In a climate where many cops have gone too far, this officer is a hero and model cop.

The dislocated kneecap was unrelated, just a goofy student with really bad timing.

Over the summer, BGA moved out of SBEC in Southie, and left the metal detectors behind in the old building.

Should BGA consider using metal detectors again?

Why put out information that could ultimately lead to someone being targeted for providing information. Does the school know you are providing information about their briefing to the media? Aren't there official channels for this?

Who could possibly be targeted as a result of this information, the "upstanding student" who spoke up, and did the RIGHT THING? I would like to posit that he or she might've saved this young man's life or that of another young person, just by speaking up.

The mentality, "snitches get..." is part of the problem. Think of productive ways to contribute to this conversation instead of villifying a young hero. "Stop snitching" is deplorable and has deteriorated our communities by taking away the voice of the people. We must continue to speak up despite the label "snitch" if we truly wish to ever feel safe in our neighborhoods. Change your perspective, and help the mission to empower people to speak up.

The "student" was arrested by a BOSTON SCHOOL POLICE OFFICER. The Boston Police just transported the "student" to the police station. The Boston School Police Officer was bit by the "student" while trying to place him in handcuffs. This is exactly why the Boston School Police need the proper tools (pepper spray/batons) to protect themselves as well as students and staff.

Seems like the officer did just fine without the use of a weapon against a child.

"BPS officers shouldn't carry guns" argument in an incident where a (seemingly) violent "child" is in possession of loaded one. Anyone else agree?

Because if the last year has taught us anything, it's that cops don't have enough firepower.

and Oranges. Also - cops aren't lighting into crowds with assault rifles and tanks. I would say the police shooing issue(s) would have more to do with their thought process around when to use lethal levels of force as opposed to questioning whether or not they should have that power. Neutering the police force isn't the answer either.

The gun was loaded

Really well written with a breezy tone!

Loaded gun in the hands of a student, no danger to your children. We handled it, nothing to see, move along. Thank you.

I expect that student gets "separated" from BGA.

It's not like he can turn back time and keep this student from entering the premises with a loaded gun. So he can let parents know there are procedures in place for this kind of situation, that they were followed, and effective.

Maybe it's because I used to be a public school teacher, but these things happen. They're sad (thank goodness no one was hurt), but given today's reality, they're a given (for more reasons than I'll blather on about here). It's not a happy reality, but no amount of pearl clutching will stop it.

Yeah, stuff happens, and a timely, well composed statement to parents goes a long way to avoiding unnecessary fear.
