DA: Seven teens beat officers serving a warrant

Updated with arraignment info.

Two brothers were arraigned today on charges they and five younger relatives beat two police officers badly enough to put them in the hospital yesterday, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Police officers went to a residence on Wayne Street in Roxbury shortly before noon to serve a warrant issued in Dorchester District Court on Woobenson Morisset, 19 for allegedly violating the terms of his release on earlier charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, assault and battery on a police officer and burglary:

They encountered him in a rear stairwell of the building, but when they attempted to arrest him he allegedly resisted violently. A large group of youths - later identified as Woobenson’s co-defendants - allegedly joined in the attack on the two officers, who were kicked, punched, and beaten. Additional officers responded to the scene and placed the assailants under arrest, while the two officers who had attempted to serve the warrants were transported to Brigham and Women’s hospital for injuries that were serious but not life-threatening. Both have since been released but will require follow-up care.

Additional officers arrived, they used their pepper spray and brought the situation under control. One officer got sprayed in the face with the spray; a woman in the residence also required medical attention when she was sprayed.

Woobenson was charged with two counts of assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest, as was his brother, Lorcen.

Woobenson was released on $500 bail; Judge Ernest Sarason declined a request from prosecutors to revoke his bail on the charges that had brought officers to his home in the first place. Lorcen was set free on personal recognizance, the DA's office reports.

Four female teens, ages 13, 14, 15, and 16, and one male, 17, were all charged with delinquency for assault and battery on a police officer, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and resisting arrest. Judge Paul Lewis imposed $500 bail for the 17-year-old and $1 bail for the younger teens, and ordered them to go to school when it re-opens after New Year's.

Innocent, etc.

Rest of the country, take note. Did you see how Boston Police managed to detain all these punks without killing a single one of them,

Also, forget juvie. These teens knew what they were doing. There is likely no hope in their future. Lock em up and let them rot.

Actually, stuff like this happens in police interactions in every city every day.... you can't compare this to the others.

This is yet more evidence of what I have been telling people around the country for some time. We simply have better trained, better behaved and better paid police around here than most other parts of the country (incidentally, those three attributes are absolutely related).

Before you poo-poo this, think about how likely it would have been in so many other jurisdictions that these punks would have been shot.

We'll probably let them off with a gentle slap on the wrist. After all Lorcen Morisset is an aspiring rapper who was trying to turn his life around.

Nice young ladies, the youngest being 13! I'm sure she'll become a contributing member of the commonwealth one day.

If a person who is wanted or about to be arrested fights back what does the public expect the police to do? If they loose the fight they risk being beaten or killed if they win the fight they are labeled as brutal thugs or racists. Either way they loose and will probably be sued by the Boston seven who just hit the lottery when the city pays them off.

They won yesterday when the arrested their man and were able to handle a violent situation with a minimum of force.

Hooray BPD! Job well done. The losers are the 6 teens who ended up in custody for preventing the police from doing their job. And this will not be a charge that gets converted to a civil infraction and dismissed. Sadly, though, there's a good chance that we will be hearing from these kids down the road.

2 officers in the hospital after a bad beating, one officer and a civilian sprayed with pepper spray....but at least the accused weren't injured. Sure, that sounds like a win to me.

...it will take the steam out of the sails (not to mix metaphors) of the First Night street layers-in.

Yes it is a win. The perps are in custody and the cops are alive. Cops know they have a tough job. They defended themselves against unarmed people without using deadly force, which should be the last possible choice in a fracas, not the first.

Zero cops accused of murdering a 12 year old during a botched raid.

The reputation of the BPD strengthened as the accused would have no leg to stand on were they to cry police brutality.

An extra seat on the Acela Express as Al Sharpton will not be making the trip north.

Cops will hopefully make a full recovery. Injuries are on the accused. I would imagine the extent of the injuries will come into play come sentencing time.

It used to be the family that prays together stays together...now its the family that attacks cops get arrested and the same cycle never ends.

I'm glad, however, that the BPD cops didn't end up killing any of the teens who assaulted and beat up the cop for no reason, but those kids really deserve to be taken off the street, tried for and charged with their crimes, and put into the clink for awhile.

The poor cops got beaten by the savage seven and the judge just kicked them to the curb by releasing five of the delinquents on a bail set at one dollar. The two others were given ankle bracelets to wear proudly at the protest tonight. Oh by the way if you protest tonight terrorize children and block the streets and subways you will have all charges dropped against you and will be eligible to sue those punching bags in blue

I swear, it will be my New Year's resolution not to explain what bail is and how it works , but if people keep on being morons, it won't last long.

Here's the way bail works- the accused cannot be held before trial unless there is a compelling reason. The juvies have as a part of their release the order to go to school. If they decide not to, they could land in pretrial lockup. There wasn't even mention of ankle bracelets, so whatever with that.

Down the road, this will either go to trial or, if they get good attorneys, they will plead guilty. Then, when the sentences are given out, you can gripe. My gut is that you will not remember this case after a week, let alone will be interested in the results months from now.

I will say this- how did Woobenson get to walk out of court after posting $500? I mean, he was being picked up for probation violations. He should definitely be in South Bay for New Years.

Every time a story comes up about the police being attacked or the police having to up the force continuum, it isn't appropriate to immediately try to tie it into the current public unrest about police brutality. This isn't "us versus them" and if you are acting as if it is and we need to see everything in that same polarized lens, then YOU are a bigger problem than the cops shooting unarmed black people. Because we want the rules to apply to them, but we can't have that discussion if we're constantly dealing with your gish gallop of stupidity getting in the way.
