Most cars stolen are stolen when the keys are in the ignition, running. How hard is it to shut off your car and lock it? Especially when everything has remote central locking? Jesus!

Because if someone did something that made them more vulnerable to a crime than they otherwise would have been, god forbid someone point out how in the future they could better protect themselves. People have an inherent and natural right to walk around stupid and senseless, goddammit!

to shut off your engine and lock your car, then you deserve to be judged and blamed if somebody steals it. This isn't Mayberry folks.

Really? That is surprising to me. Got a citation for that?

Dunno, quick google search turns up this advice from an insurance company, and I suppose they ought to know, since it's their rice bowl after all:

It's also apparently a big problem in St. Petersburg, FL -- in 2013 more than 80% of the cars stolen had the keys in the ignition (see this story: http://jalopnik.com/60-of-cars-stolen-in-st-petersburg-fl-had-keys-left-... )

Even in areas where auto theft is not common, when you hear about it, it's always someone who left a car running unattended.

You read this story and your concern was the car, not the small child?

I mean, even on the coldest day that car won't lose heat fast enough to matter while using an ATM.

In some states, leaving any kid under 14 in a car without an adult would be a felony even on a mild day. That's stupid and extreme, but a four year old in a running car is dangerous even without the risk of robbery - kids that age have been known to get out of their seats and put the car in gear.

....kids that age have been known to get out of their seats and put the car in gear.

Well, close. Didn't even have to put it in gear.

~1960, I was somewhere around 5, mom parks her VW in front of a neighbor's house on a small hill in Arlington and goes inside. Somehow, sometime later, the car ends up on a neighbor's lawn.

I have no idea what happened. ;-)

New England cable news reporter says this all happened in South Boston not East Boston!

I just got an alert from the DA's office that he will be arraigned in East Boston District Court, and the only question is whether today or tomorrow.
