Police use beanbag gun to subdue woman who'd just stabbed a four-year-old in East Boston

Boston Police report a woman who'd gotten into an argument with the boy's father grabbed his four-year-old son and stabbed him shortly before 6:50 p.m. yesterday at 106 Paris St. WCVB reports she slashed the boy's neck.

Police say people who witnessed the attack managed to grab the boy away from her and his father rushed him to the East Boston Health Center on Gove St. She then locked herself in a bedroom before officers arrived, police say:

She refused to unlock the door after numerous verbal commands from the officers. Under the direction of the supervisor on scene, officers used a battering ram to gain access to the room. Once inside, officers observed the suspect holding a thin serrated blade, approximately 3 inches in length in her right hand. The supervisor gave the suspect multiple commands in English and in Spanish to drop the weapon. After she refused to comply with all verbal commands, the supervisor engaged the suspect with the police department-issued less-lethal shotgun, causing the suspect to drop the blade immediately. Officers were able to place the suspect in custody after a brief but violent struggle without any further injury to the suspect.

The boy was taken to Boston Medical Center and is expected to survive, police say. The woman was taken to Mass. General for observation. Once released from there she will be charged with a variety of charges, police say.

(preface: hope all involved get the help/treatment they need...)

and...anyone ever tried using one of those bean bag guns in a cornhole game?

That has some real possibilities - as a game, and as a band name.

...and an emergency room entry.

The perp here needs a decent dose of the jail treatment, as far as I can tell.

Do tell.

(provided the woman is mentally ill, which is a reasonable possibility)

Oh stop it. Ask the kid what they think of your silly opinion. Mental illness of that deadly degree is only "cured"/mitigated in two way swirlz. Away from society or put down.

what's done is done. she slashed the neck of a 4 year old child and deserves AT LEAST a significant jail sentence. if this was a 20 yr old male stabbed another 20 year old male in this area everyone would be crying "low life scum" and wishing the perp to get ample jail time (hell many readers would be pressing the VICTIM to get jail time in that kind of altercation)

Do you assume that everyone who does something awful, showing a lack of impulse control and/or utter disregard for the lives, rights, and wellbeing of innocent people, is by definition mentally ill? Should we thus replace all jails and prisons with hospitals? Or do you have access to information not provided here? I would hope that the gender of the perp is not a prejudicial factor for you, as your rationality and sense of justice generally seems unencumbered by such chauvinistic attitudes and "isms".

The truth is, we don't know and prescribing jail no matter what, given the possibility of mental illness, is inappropriate.

Jail doesn't fix crazy. The US in general, Massachusetts included, does a piss-poor job of dealing with mental health issues other than through incarceration, where people may be reasonably held away from society but appropriate services are often not available.

The ones used in these guns are like the size of an infants sock filled with sand.

I know many people would argue that this woman deserved to die for what she did to that little boy. But seriously, kudos to BPD for employing a tactic that had a chance of not making this even more of a bloodbath. Many cops elsewhere in this country would have shot her about 60 times and probably missed with atleast 20 of those bullets possibly injuring other innocent people. It's pretty clear the restraint most Massachusetts police officers have when dealing with some of the worst things this world has to offer. I do think there is a growing problem with policing in this country but in contrast with other parts of the country, Massachusetts seems to hire well educated, well intentioned officers who for the most part use good judgement in de-escalating situations.

I would add that it's crucial that standards of hiring and training be maintained, and that there is always room for improvement.

Yeah. I think they also used in a month or so back in Dorchester when some guy with a knife was threatening to blow up the place with the gas stove. We really do have a top notch police force.

the BPD has been doing an excellent, excellent job lately. Hats off for officers' handling of this and other recent situations.
