Another woman robbed by a teen in the South End on Saturday; police followed tracking software to suspect

Boston Police report arresting a 15-year-old on charges he "ran towards her and snatched her purse which contained her wallet, cash and her iPhone" around 8:45 p.m. on Saturday at Shawmut Avenue and Waltham Street.

The kid, along with three or four friends, then ran away.

Resourceful officers utilized the Find My iPhone App on the victim’s phone which led them to the area of 584 Tremont Street where they observed a male matching the very specific given description. Officers were able to stop the suspect without incident and then located the victim’s purse underneath a nearby parked car.

Separately on Saturday, police arrested three teens on charges they used BB guns that looked like heavier firepower to mug at least one of the two women who reported being approached in the area of Titus Sparrow Park around 10 p.m.

As the South End turns into a neighborhood consisting solely of extreme"Haves" (who are hell-bent on making their "Haves" incredibly obvious) and extreme "Have Nots," I think this type of crime is only going to increase. It's sad that there are no more "In Betweens" left in the neighborhood.

"It's sad that there are no more "In Betweens" left in the neighborhood."

Why?

I hear you but this kind of thing was much more common in the 70s, 80s and 90s when there were a lot more "have nots" in the South End.

The South End is and ALWAYS WILL BE Roxbury!

As in, if you brandish a BB gun that looks like something a lot heavier, you're much more likely to get killed instead of merely arrested? It seems like this is a thing and maybe someone should be doing some outreach in schools and community centers or wherever possible. Is that happening?

Not only do they not care. If they get shot and live and it will be a cool story among their peers.

Lack of opportunity will make you not give a f.

Boston residents have to jump through extreme and unreasonable measures to carry, so criminals are unlikely to run into that issue unless they choose an off-duty cop or fellow criminal as their victim. It's probable that anyone who hasn't heard of "find my iPhone" and is out mugging people isn't connecting the neurons to draw that conclusion anyway.

I'm not claiming without stats that more legal concealed carrying would dissuade criminals based on the idea of not knowing if their proposed victim is armed. It makes a lot of sense, though, and I wouldn't be surprised if some law-breakers are emboldened by the fact that the chances of a Boston resident carrying concealed are very, very small.

within seconds of exiting the police car, they might have had some chance to edify him...you think?

You're part of the problem. That's probably what the parent is telling these kids. "They shouldn't have shot that poor boy, they should have investigated further", when they should be telling these kids "This is why you don't brandish a gun even if it's a toy, look what can happen!"

Here's a photo quiz for you. Which one is real?

It took me a minute, and I own that pistol. How long does it take you? Long enough to get shot at if someone was holding or pointing the real one at you and you had to make a judgment call?

Even the person who called 911 said "it's probably fake." He was twelve, on a playground. You'd think that logic and caution would have made them respond sensibly. But no.

Since the phones also have software kill switches that will turn the phone into a brick and make it unsellable. (Does Android have that yet?)

So not for many phones now, but there are apps like Cerberus that will do this.
