all joking aside, East Boston was a lot safer from violent crime like this 30, 40, 50 years ago.

It's a lot safer than it ever has been. The internet just didn't report it as much back then, for whatever reason.

The proximity to Chelsea is likely the source of a chunk of the crime in Eagle Hill as it's an easy escape over the bridge. But compared to what are considered the violent parts of Boston, East Boston is incredibly safe, and the reputation is entirely unwarranted. How many murders have there been in EB in the past 5 years compared to other neighborhoods? And that's including a molestation victim who killed the man that tortured him as a child, not some random act or gang violence.

I'd bet a good chunk of cash that they are not residents.

..that the plural form of anecdote isn't data? But what will I clutch my pearls over now if a single isolated crime isn't evidence of a massive spree?

Your right Steeve, I've noticed Egelston Sq Jamaica Plain area in the news every other week, stabbing shooting etc. and Jamaica Plain is as gentrified a Boston neighborhood can be.
The area where this car jacking took place has always been a haven for multiple assorted types of crimes, Marion street Eagle hill section, I say it is time to have police on bikes patrol the area at all hours of the day and night , and replacing the police station on eagle hill won't change things a bit.
