Police: Officers dragged 100 yards by car driven by man they'd just pulled over in Dorchester

A Dorchester man faces arraignment today on numerous charges after he allegedly gunned his car while two police officers were asking him to step out last night - dragging them 100 yards until he crashed into a parked car, Boston Police say.

Police say officers on patrol on Blue Hill Avenue around 7 p.m. on Sunday noticed Bryant Gilbert, 45, speeding and swerving from lane to lane in the area of Stratton Street:

When officers activated the emergency equipment (blue lights and sirens) on their unmarked cruiser, the vehicle slowed and appeared as if it would stop, but then continued on for a considerable distance at about 5 miles per hour. When the vehicle finally came to a stop, officers approached and observed that the vehicle was still in gear. The officers requested the operator to place the vehicle in park and remove the keys from the ignition, but the operator adamantly refused. Fearing the operator's reckless driving was a danger to other citizens in the area, officers attempted to secure the driver and the vehicle when the operator stepped on the gas, dragging both officers with the vehicle. The officers were dragged for about 100 yards before the vehicle crashed into a parked car. The operator and his passenger fled the vehicle, and the officers pursued on foot, quickly catching up to the operator. After a violent struggle, the operator was handcuffed and placed into custody.

Both officers were transported to Brigham and Women's Hospital for treatment; both have been released.

Gilbert is charged with, among other things, failure to submit to a police officer, assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon on a police officer, negligent operation (second and prior offense), leaving the scene of a personal-injury accident, leaving the scene of a property-damage accident and resisting arrest.

Police added a charge of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute after booking officers allegedly found "a large sum of US currency and several small individual bags of a substance believed to be marijuana" on him during booking.

Innocent, etc.

I can't believe someone was even able to do 70mph on Blue Hill, without crashing, what with the frequent intersections.

Many bad people will do whatever it takes to get away. Even if it mean taking other lives in the process. Going down such roads at super speeds isn't too hard to imagine.

Or someone is exaggerating the actual speed.

Wow they actually charged a driver for hurting a pedestrian for once? Of course it's only because they were cops, but still. It's so rare that maniac drivers are held responsible even the slightest bit.

Police have the ultimate Damned if you do, damned if you don't job. This comment is a prime example of that.

I run, walk, and drive every single day in the city. Pedestrians are the most impolite and pose the most danger to themselves, all things considered. (Crossing with barely a look at traffic).

I also see BPD occasionally ticketing cars for cross walk violations.

Give it a rest and try looking both ways before you cross.

This morning members of the Boston Police Youth Violence Strike Force, Fugitive Apprehension Unit, United States Marshals Office, and State Police arrested Bryant Gilbert, 34, of Dorchester. Gilbert was wanted for Conspiracy to Distribute Cocaine and Cocaine Base in violation of Title 21 sections 846; 841 (a) (1). In an attempt to elude the officers Gilbert fled the third floor apartment through a bedroom window to a porch and broke into another apartment located at that address. He was found hiding under the bed. Seized at the time of arrest was 150 grams of Crack Cocaine and thousands of dollars in Unite States Currency. He will be arraigned in Dorchester District Court and charged with the warrants as well as Trafficking Class B Drugs 100-199 grams, and resisting arrest.

I know several people who use cocaine recreationally, all of whom are gainfully employed and not criminals. Don't send cops, send the IRS.

The guys & gals of BPD are brave.

I'll be the first to take issue with what I see as BS issues around Traffic Details and the Quinn Bill. But when these guys are out there dealing with bad guys, they seem to do it pretty well, and face-off to scary bad guys.
