Police know that two men wound up stabbed in Egleston Square early one September morning, but not much else

District E-13 Capt. Al Andres says investigators don't know how two men wound up with stab wounds - one requiring immediate surgery - on Washington Street early on Sept. 30, because both men have said they were too drunk to provide any useful information.

About all investigators know for sure is that both men wound up at Boston Medical Center after whatever it was that happened outside Coco's Lounge after the bar had closed on Sept. 30, Andres told the Boston Licensing Board at a hearing this morning.

Police issued Coco's a citation, which led to today's hearing, because the two men did say they were in the lounge before it closed. But Coco's owner, Jose de la Rosa, told the board that he doubts the men got drunk inside his establishment. He said the night was slow and people there were more into eating than drinking. He said he did not even know about the incident until 7 that morning, when he got a message from Boston Police.

Andres told the board that police pulled up outside 3171 Washington St.around 1:15 a.m. to find two men in an SUV, the passenger bleeding from a laceration above his eye - and the driver yelling obscenities at the officers and demanding they let him drive his brother to Boston Medical Center.

They let them go, but followed them to the medical center, where both refused to talk, Andres said.

As a detective was there, another man showed up in the emergency room with a wound to his abdomen and a collapsed lung, who was rushed into surgery before the detective could talk to him, Andres said. He added that a subsequent investigation showed that the two stabbings were related, that both men said they were in Coco's before it closed, but that they then added they were too drunk to provide any details on how they got stabbed.

The board decides Thursday what action, if any, to take.
