Rhode Island man charged with going berserk at Logan baggage area

A Naragansett, RI man who got off a Delta flight last night left Logan in handcuffs after, State Police say, he sprayed a trooper with some sort of liquid, then tried to beat him up.

State Police say something set off Kevin Luckzak, 28, while he was still in the air. A state trooper who went over to meet the flight was directed to the Terminal A baggage area, where Luckzak was in the process of making a claim for an alleged lost bag.

Luckzak then walked out of the baggage office toward the Trooper and sprayed an unknown liquid solution in his face.

The Trooper then attempted to arrest Luckzak, who resisted and began to punch the Trooper. During the ensuing struggle, the Trooper and the suspect went to the floor in the area of the baggage carousel. Luckzak continued to assault the Trooper, punching him and spitting on him on twice. Luckzak then broke free and ran toward the information booth. The Trooper pursued the suspect and, with the assistance of other Troopers, subdued and handcuffed him. The suspect was later treated by Boston EMS for a bloody nose he received while he was fighting to avoid arrest.

EMTs also attended to the trooper, who suffered face, hand and knee injuries, but who did not require hospitalization, State Police say.

Luckzak initially had bail set at $1,000 on charges of assault and battery on a police officer, assault with a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest, State Police said. Luckzak had his bail reduced to $500 at his arraignment in East Boston Municipal Court this morning, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Innocent, etc.

Maybe it was his lack of a criminal record or more likely the color of his skin that allowed this domestic terrorist to walk away with no bullet holes, only a bloody nose and have his bail reduced! God bless Amerikkka! Lmfao

It was because this happened in a crowded airport terminal and we’re not in a place like Oklahoma where troopers are more likely to shoot.

Also, you might want to read more of what Adam writes about bails granted in criminal cases, and the griping that some of the regulars give, and my response pointing out Massachusetts’ bail policy.

That’s the bail for assaulting a police officer??? That seems far from appropriate.srrdcw

The high, high bail of 500.00

Has he ever skipped out on bail? Does he have a lengthy criminal record (before this)? Does he own his home, making him less of a flight risk?

Bail has nothing to do with the charges and everything to do with getting the accused to show up in court. The default is “personal recognizance”, which means his bail is $500 more than it should be by default.

...for the officer to get assaulted, bravely pursue and successfully arrest the suspect, then see his (alleged) assailant released for such a ridiculously low bail. At an airport no less! Why isn't this a federal offense?

Yes, I know bail is not supposed to be punitive, merely to ensure a future appearance. But anyone who can afford to fly can afford to skip out on $500 bail.

I don’t want to defend the guy, but I’ll defend the judge who split the difference between the proposals of the prosecution and the defense.

As an officer I can confirm, it’s EXTREMELY demoralizing.

The small bail only means that the judge believes that the defendant will appear for trial.

Facing charges of assaulting a State Trooper like this, probably police in RI would help deliver the defendant to trial, if necessary.

You should know better than anyone on here that bail isn't meant to be punitive.

But, who can't come up with $1000 to get out of jail? And who would need to have that knocked down to $500 to be able to make bail?

Right now I would be able to come up with $1000 (thankfully), but there was a time in my life when even coming up with $500 would have been impossible. And that was when I was working one full time and one part time job.
Not everyone has extra money at the end of the month...
