I wonder how editors decide whether to publish stories like this.

A couple gets drunk at a bar. She kisses another guy. He loses his temper and batters her by pulling a handful of her hair out, setting in motion a police response. In short, a couple drinks, fights, and he pulls her hair in a drunken rage. I'm not diminishing the crime. The law protects women from being battered by their boyfriends and visa versa but the question I'm interested in is the news value.

The only part of the story that strikes me as having a news value is the roommates opinion that the victim deserved to be battered - absurd and yet a a "common sense" apologist's opinion. The opinion is not central to the news, it's the element that opens up the story to a debate about social justice, which is what the roommate is trying to argue, as opposed to criminal justice. Know what I mean?

A friend of mine worked for Patch and they made him write about drunk drivers with their names in the articles! Seriously! He quit eventually.
It's surprising to me how every fight in the bar is about someone's girl and some other guy. Like ALL the time! Why aren't people getting used to the idea that monogamy is a thing of the past for most and getting upset about it doesn't help? Let it go and find someone else! The other thing is how people don't think they can ever find someone else :) Come on... even if talking isn't your strength, there are now so many marriages between people who met on one of the popular dating sites that this shouldn't even be an issue. Years ago admitting that you are looking for a date online would have a bad effect but times have changed.

It isn't about monogamy. Control and turf and territory.
