The Boston Licensing Board next week considers a deal in which the landlord of the defunct Morton's Steakhouse on Boylston Street would sell its liquor license to Boston Beer Works on Brookline Avenue so that Boston Beer Works can in turn sell its beer and wine license to Mei Mei on Park Drive.

Phew.

Adam Salsman asks:

Where does one get excellent pork buns in Boston?

The Boston Licensing Board says it doesn't have any beer and wine licenses left to hand out, so if Mei Mei wants one for its new Audubon Circle location, it will either have to re-apply and hope it gets lucky or try to buy a license on the open market.

Eater Boston alerts us to a one-day kosher-ish homage to the Chinese New Year at a Chinatown restaurant:

What happens when you mix the Chinese New Year with Jewish cuisine with O Ya/jm Curley alum Mark O'Leary, and then you serve it all at Shojo? You get dishes like luobagao latkes with lox, matzoh ball ramen, and black & white challah, and you only get it for one night.

Jordan Munson asks:

Best place in Chinatown (Boston) to grab a quick ramen lunch?

Jacqueline Church, who lives next door to Chinatown, reacts to some white foodie's rant about how she allegedly only gets authentic food at a Chinese restaurant when she goes there with a Chinese acquaintance - and provides tips for trying things that might not be on the menu:

Don’t assume that Chinese restaurants are trying to dupe you or are interested in serving you bad food. In my experience, they are genuinely happy if someone is curious or adventurous about their cuisine and they’re proud to share it.

Meat pieA meat pieThe Boston Licensing Board this week gave KO Catering and Pies, 256 Marginal St. in East Boston, two more hours in which to serve up its flaky down-under comestibles.

The Australian meat-pie place convinced the board - along with neighbors and city officials - to extend its closing time from 10 p.m. to midnight. City officials and members of the Jeffries Point Neighborhood Association said KO has proven an asset to the area as the shipyard is revitalized.

There was no such luck, however, for Yong Hon, 772 Blue Hill Ave., Dorchester, whose request to extends its closing time from 1:30 a.m. to as late as 2:30 a.m. on weekends was quashed by the board.

Unlike in the East Boston case, city officials rose as one to urge rejection, so that people getting out of bars would have one fewer place at which to raise hell.

City officials are opposing a request by a Blue Hill Avenue Chinese take-out place to extend its closing time from 1:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. weeknights and 2:30 a.m. on weekends.

If anything, Yong Hon, 772 Blue Hill Ave., should be scaling back its hours, representatives of the mayor's office and city councilors Charles Yancey and Steve Murphy told the Boston Licensing Board.

They said Blue Hill Avenue has a problem with people congregating there after the bars close and noted that even Simco now only stays open until 1 a.m.

The Boston Licensing Board voted yesterday to suspend the license for Golden House on West Broadway for seven days after a Boston police sergeant found it open at 2:50 one morning - 50 minutes past its legal closing time.

The punishment - unusually severe for the licensing board - came despite owner Xian Wan's plea for mercy because he needed extra money due to his son dying of cancer.

The owner of a South Boston Chinese restaurant that has had issues with its legal closing time in the past told the Boston Licensing Board today he had no choice last fall but to stay open late into the night: He needed the extra money because his son was dying of cancer.
