The Dorchester Reporter reports city officials shut a Chinese restaurant on Blue Hill Avenue yesterday after inspectors found its kitchen air vent clogged with grease - and its basement clogged with rats and cockroaches.

The Fire Department in particular has paid close attention to the condition of restaurant air vents since the 2007 Tai Ho fire in West Roxbury, which started in a grease-filled vent and which killed two firefighters.

The Irish tourist who allegedly stole a North End cannoli at knifepoint will not have to face trial if he stays out of trouble for nine months - and performs 50 hours of community service - the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports, adding he can fulfill that requirement back in Ireland.

That should help Robert McTernan, 25, of Newbridge, County Kildare, comply with another part of the agreement - to stay away from Bova's, where he decided he urgently needed a cannoli at 3:30 a.m. on Sept. 13.

Where the Japanese prefer sake, which is fermented from rice, Koreans would rather down soju, which is distilled from rice. That's now gotten two Korean-oriented restaurants in trouble with the Boston Licensing Board, because fermented beverages are allowed under their licenses, while distilled beverages - even with a similar alcohol content - are not.

The Boston Licensing Board voted yesterday to give lawyers for Morton's of Chicago and its Boylston Street landlord three months to resolve a lawsuit over back rent, a move that could result in a new restaurant moving into the prominent space.

The landlord formally evicted Morton's in January for failing to pay its rent - and then sued to ensure that if Morton's tried to sell its liquor license, the landlord would get its share.

UPDATE: Board defers any action until at least mid-November.

John Button, who owns the Fairmount Avenue building where Townsends once dished up upscale fare, told the Boston Licensing Board he's found somebody willing to open a new restaurant there - but only if he can clear up the legal uncertainty over the restaurant's liquor license.

A neighborhood retail area that relies on foot traffic is no place for a pizza place that claims most of its business consists of deliveries, Roslindale Square residents and businesspeople told Domino's, which wants to move from a mini-mall off the West Roxbury Parkway to a storefront in Roslindale Square.

Close to 200 people packed a basement meeting room at the Roslindale Community Center tonight to oppose the proposed new location in the office building next to the library, across from Adams Park. Local businesspeople, residents and the city haven't spent 20 years turning Roslindale Village into today's electic collection of mostly locally owned shops and restaurants just to let a delivery business move in, they said.

No, not our junior senator. Mike Ball reports on his own honorary-girl moment:

In particular when I chaired the board of a large downtown church, the woman who was senior minister called me that more than once by way of pointing out that my policies and proposals under discussion were female inclusive and aware. I grew up in an equality minded family...and this was a UU church, after all.
