Crowd at Boston Garden

Two minutes before the puck was supposed to drop tonight, Alex Carlson found herself way far away from her seat as Garden security got extra tough to prevent a recurrence of last night's stabbing at the Celtics game.

Bill Linehan singing Danny Boy

Boston City Council meetings usually conclude with a recitation of recently deceased Bostonians whom councilors wish to remember with a moment of silence. Today's meeting, though, had an added ending: City Council Bill Linehan singing "Danny Boy."

Linehan started the meeting by giving councilors shamrock pins. As the normal council business wound down, an aide brought a guitar up to Linehan's podium at the front of the council chambers and he said he wanted to send his fellow councilors into "the high holidays" with an appropriate song.

After he was done, the council and staffers rose as one to applaud.

TD Garden officials found themselves before the Boston Licensing Board today, apologizing for being helpless in the face of a force like Garth Brooks.

More specifically, they were there to answer a police citation for "failure to disperse patrons in a safe, timely and orderly fashion" on the night of Jan. 24. Police say the area around and under the Garden - in particular, North Station - was so full of people exiting one Garth Brooks concert and people waiting to enter the next that the result was pedestrian gridlock that kept innocent commuters just trying to get home on commuter rail from getting to their trains on time.

Some kind of switch problem is wreaking all kinds of havoc at North Station this afternoon. Or as Sue puts it:

I got 99 problems and all of them seem to be switch issues at North Station.

Rise is announcing it will shut for good at the end of April.

As many of you know, our lease expired several years ago and we have been open since on borrowed time.

It’s been an amazing run of over 16 years which is rare in the club business and even rarer for a club that never served a drop of alcohol. ...

I know I speak for the entire RISE staff (past and present) when I say how much we all appreciate each and every one of you who come and dance and socialize in the wee hours of the night in the sleepy town called Boston.

Giant icicle behind Bromfield Street

Sarah Rubenstein forwards a pair of photos of a giant icicle coming loose behind her office at 36 Bromfield St. this afternoon.

The first one shows the giant ice spear coming loose. Then, she reports, part of it shattered one of her office's windows, showering a conference room - fortunately empty at the time - with glass and ice.

The second one shows it hurtling towards the ground - just as somebody was walking right at it:

Boston City Hall Plaza had a fountain in 1973

How about a fountain, like in 1973? Photo from the US National Archives.

Mayor Walsh is soliciting ideas on how to convert City Hall Plaza from a barren brick wasteland into a place people would actually want to spend time on when it's not being used for concerts, festivals or circus performances.

This is the people's plaza, and we’ve seen how it can bring the City together for international events and community events alike. I’m looking to our experts in architecture and urban planning for design, curation, and partnership ideas, as well as residents of Boston and other interested parties.

Firefighters shut South Station on the Red Line and ordered the power off in both directions on the line until they could find and then extinguish what turned out to be a small trash fire on the tracks about halfway between South Station and Downtown Crossing.

BFD gave the T permission to restore power around 4:15 p.m.

The fire sent smoke into both stations.

He's described as white, tan and about 5'10".

If you know any suspiciously tan guys, contact Special Agent Adam Howe at 617-721-4098.

Firefighters responded to South Station shortly before 9:30 p.m. for a trash fire on the outbound side of the Red Line. The fire was not on the tracks, it was quickly blasted with some water and that was that, except for the smell of smoke and the delays on the Red Line.
