Creating a wireless network out of FastLane transponders
Zipcar and Meadow Networks founder Robin Chase imagines a national, open-source wireless network built atop the millions of toll transponders and other wireless devices that already sit in people's cars.
Talking to an audience of developers working on Massachusetts transportation data, Chase said the government should use some of the billions of dollars now being invested in "smart grid" technologies to make far better use of the devices and networks already in place along the nation's highways.
Each of the devices could be turned into a mini wireless access point connected to highway networks that already access to create "a mesh network" for "wireless coast to coast," she said.
Right now, she said, your typical EZPass transponder is in use maybe 30 seconds a month - as commuters pass through toll plazas. "We have a device, we have a wireless network, and it is so under capacity," she said.

The politest intersection in Boston
Boston's only polite intersection? Maybe that's what happens when you put an intersection in the middle of a forest. Mike Ball hails the intersection of Enneking, Turtle Pond and Dedham parkways deep in the woods of Stony Brook Reservation, where drivers not only obey the four-way stop but are actually courteous to one another:
... Could it be something in the oxygen from all the foliage? Might some nearby unknown native American burial ground be affecting Bostonians as they arrive at the intersection? Would the bucolic nature of the park all around calm the savages?
The cause is far less important than the mere existence of the magic intersection. ...

You might not want to drive past the Museum of Science late Thursday night
NOTE: Make that Sunday - the state has postponed the work until then.
Because you'll be blinded by science likely to get caught in a jam caused by road construction work between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., the state Department of Transportation advises.

Governor wants green light for red-light cameras
They have them in other states. Now Gov. Patrick wants legislation to let cities and towns put cameras atop traffic signals to photograph and fine drivers caught going through red lights.
Interestingly, he put it in his latest proposal to deal with the state's latest fiscal problems - so that's how he's going to soften the blow of cuts in local aid to cities and towns (click on the link, then either scroll down or search on "red light").
