Flooding on Rte. 18 in New Bedford

Ric Duarte shows us Rte. 18 in New Bedford, suggests, "Umm ... better stay away!"

That's what happens when close to 4 inches of rain falls. The rain wasn't quite as intense up our way, but Eastie Strong shows what it did to Memorial Drive at the MicroCenter/Trader Joe's entrance:

Councilor Tito Jackson (Roxbury) says the city could boost revenue and free up downtown parking spaces by rolling out meters that accept payments via smartphones.

Jackson says the increased revenue would come by ending the current practice of people getting lucky and zipping into spaces that have time left on the meter - under a smartphone system, a meter would reset every time somebody new pinged the meter with a phone.

State Police reported a car-b-q around 9:40 a.m. on I-93 south at Furnace Brook. All lanes were shut to let the Quincy FD do its thing.

Ed. note: Rhyming headline because I had to get it out of my system, I'll try not to do that again, at least not for highway fires.

Turnpike lanes in Boston

Brian D'Amico photographed the lane restrictions on the turnpike headed toward the Pru Tunnel yesterday.

MassDOT will be restricting lanes in the tunnel the weekends of March 28, April 4 and April 25 to allow for removal of an old and no longer needed noise-buffering ceiling in the tunnel.

Hawk on Commonwealth Avenue

Roving UHub photographer Lauren Reemsnyder captured the scene this morning as somebody blocked traffic on Comm. Ave. near Allston Street to keep a hawk from getting flattened - because hawks don't know you're supposed to cross at the green, not in-between.

UPDATE: Reemsnyder reports:

I don't know how he ended up on the street, but animal control came by and took him away a little while ago. I think he was injured because some idiot tried to get him to fly away by nudging him with a skateboard, but he wouldn't budge. It took animal control two seconds to get him into a cage and into the truck. Hopefully he'll be okay!

Narrowing the Pru Tunnel down to one lane for ceiling removal is doing a major number on traffic on the turnpike today. At 9:20 a.m, Evan Allen tweeted:

Avoid the pike westbound out of Boston! It is not moving at all.
