Tow operators act against illegal parkers by illegally blocking driveways. Photo by Judy Spreckels.

Judy Spreckels says tow-truck drivers eager for extra revenue always prowl her neighborhood at the start of street-cleaning season to hook trucks parked on the wrong streets. She reports this morning, however, that fights broke out on Atherton Street when drivers from competing companies showed up:

Just witnessed 8 tow truck drivers from 3 different towing companies loudly fighting directly outside my home. For 20 minutes. Happens every week with street cleaning. Trucks parked on sidewalks, engines running, and now fighting.

The state Department of Transportation will spend $54 million and periodically shut the Big Dig to replace those crappy light fixtures.

"We just have to do it," state Transportation Secretary Richard Davey said, to which Dan Kennedy asks:

How come no one said that about preserving #MBTA service?

See? Plenty of room on Tremont

The peeved citizen who repeatedly complained about the McDonald's delivery truck blocking West Street early every Friday sent a shoutout this morning to the BPD officer in cruiser 1145 who forced the driver to turn onto Tremont Street to keep West clear. Granted, he let the driver pull onto the one-way Tremont the wrong way, but baby steps, people.

The Jamaica Plain Gazette reports opponents of the state's plan to replace the Casey Overpass with a new system of surface roads may try to delay and block the project until the light dawns over MassDOT and the state decides to replace the overpass with a new overpass, preferably one that is "Olmsted inspired."

UPDATE: State Police report arresting Brandon Smith, 25, of Dorchester at the Saint Francis House, a homeless shelter on Boylston Street, where he was detained by Boston Police around 2 p.m. He's scheduled for arraignment tomorrow in Dorchester District Court on a charge of receiving stolen property - the stolen car that hit the trooper.

State and Boston police launched a massive manhunt across Dorchester and Mattapan this morning after a trooper directing traffic at Neponset Circle was hit by a stolen car whose driver fled the scene even as at least one other trooper started shooting at him.

Washington Street by Corinth.

Ed Grzyb, who took this photo (along with this one showing skid marks). Channel 5 reports the collision may have started when a tire on the police cruiser blew out.

Stupid truck.

Every Friday morning, somebody tries to drive down West Street in Downtown Crossing. Only to have to back up and find another way to work because of a stupid McDonald's delivery truck parked there, just around the corner from Tremont.

It takes skill to block a bus stop, a bike lane AND a hydrant simultaneously. Well, that, and an 18-wheeler. JP Biker was on hand to chronicle this achievement, on Centre at Seaverns.

Smush.

At least nobody seemed to be hurt when an inbound 34E bus and an Escalade collided at the entrance to the Burger King and CVS on Washington Street in Roslindale around 10 a.m. today.

The Boston Cyclists Union is throwing a shindig tonight at JJ Foley's Fireside Tavern in Forest Hills to celebrate the state's decision on the Casey Overpass. Starts at 6 p.m., with free appetizers.

The state's decision was to replace the crumbling structure with expanded and reconfigured surface roads, but the union is hoping folks who wanted to see a new overpass will come as well:

Sometime in the early 1960s, MIT professor Kevin Lynch mounted a camera on a car and compiled a time-lapse movie of the trip.

The page says 1958, but the movie shows the JFK Building and the Pru tower, which didn't go up until later.

The Metropolitan Area Planning Council is releasing a report today that says proposed massive cuts in T service and fare hikes would drive more people to cars, which in turn would lead to hundreds of millions of dollars in new health-care costs as drivers crash, die and gain weight. Mariana Arcaya, MAPC public health manager says:
