Newly elected state Sen. Lydia Edwards announced today she will formally resign as a city councilor on April 30, which she says will give the city council enough time to call a special election to replace her without her East Boston, Charlestown and North End constituents losing representation on the council.

GBH reports the now dual councilor/senator doesn't want to talk about leaving her council seat. Maybe at some point, she says. There's no law that says she has to give up the job as councilor.

The owners of the condos at 524 East Broadway, a four-story building near H Street in South Boston, today sued the Zoning Board of Appeal and the couple that owns the neighboring house, seeking to block construction of a four-story extension to the house next door, saying the board had some nerve approving a four-story addition that will harm them and set a precedent that will let owners of other smallish buildings over-densify the neighborhood. With no opposition, City Councilor Lydia Edwards today became State Sen. Elect Lydia Edwards in the special election to replace Joe Boncore. Once she formally submits her resignation as councilor, the City Councilor can set dates for a preliminary and final election to fill the remainder of her two-year council term.

Joe Boncore in the First Suffolk and Middlesex district (which includes East Boston). With no Republican candidate, that means she will soon move from the City Council to the State Senate. Tug being dismantled in East Boston

Roving UHub photographer Michael Campbell watched one old tug getting dismantled at an East Boston pier, while the another awaited its fate. Behind them, the HC Melina was outbound, heading to Houston, likely loaded with scrap metal.
