I've always thought of a nice cellar(well, cella) that you can accually hang out in as a basement. but a crappy one that is like a cave is a cellar to me. I guess since i've always had a "cellah" but my friends with nice ones call them basements
Agree with Pat. My folks have a real cella. Looks sort of like a cave, rocks jut out, then there is a crawl space, but we kept big oil tanks down there for years to heat the house. My dad had a workbench and tools and stuff down there. Then we had a second refridgerator down there, but sometimes just put stuff down there that needed to stay cool, since the cellar was cool enough.
oh MAN! I'm so happy to see this here; whenever we'd go into the basement we'd be going to a place called "downcella." For example: "Where's Courtney?" "She's downcella!"I'm from Hudson, NH, but my whole family's from MA, (and if you know anything about Hudson, you know it borders Tyngsboro!) and we really grew up with the lingo. Living in Vermont, people really don't appreciate the phrase.
Yup! I have a cella. If it's finished and you can hang out down there it's a basement. If it's just a hole in the ground under you house with the foundation exposed it's definitely a cella.
Yep, at our old house we had a cellar. Stone foundation, really creepy. We would always get buttloads of millipedes down there during the summer. In the new house, we don't have a cellar. We have a finished basement, as it's a raised ranch. I like this so much better. Still gets wicked cold, though.

I cannot understand why Amtrak call their fancy train a cella.

Down Cella
Note that in the above, down is not a verb. It's part of the location in the house. As in,
