I never had any idea this wasn't a common term until I went to college in MN this year and knocked on the door next to me looking for a 'hair elastic' and they had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. Imagine my dismay!

dude i know. i asked for a hair elastic and everyone got confused. and then they were like "do u mean hair tie?"nerrelastic, yo.

Same thing...in WI, nobody really raised too much of a fuss, but now down here on LI, anytime I ask for an elastic, the person gives me one and goes "you mean a rubber band"...no, the thing is called an elastic...
