Proposed apartments at Readville intersection

Graffiti or art?

A concerned citizen reports being a little confused by what's on the side of this store on Hyde Park Avenue in Hyde Park:

Unable to determine if this is a gang related or simple stupid art.

The Suffolk County Mosquito Control Project will spray areas around Fowl Meadow with an aerosol insecticide this coming Wednesday night - Thursday if it rains or the truck has issues.

The sumethrin spraying will be done in the area of Neponset Valley Parkway between Meadow Road and Prescott Street. The Boston Public Health Commission advises: Read more.

UPDATE: Road reopened at 11:30 p.m.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m. just south of the Americas Food Basket mall. Van flipped on its side; at least three injuries. The road is shut south of Metropolitan Avenue.

Blimp over Hyde Park

Hyde Park residents who looked up shortly before 11 p.m. got a look at a blimp puttering overhead.

Franklin and Needham Line service was shut for about 20 minutes as Boston Police pursued a burglary suspect who kept running across the train tracks south of Canterbury Street around 3 p.m. Officers swarmed both sides of the tracks for the suspect, who eventually tried to make good his escape through wooded yards on the Roslindale side - only to be caught by Transit Police officers who had arrived to help out.

City Councilor Tim McCarthy (Hyde Park, Mattapan, Roslindale) thinks local schools need to educate students on what to do if they find syringes, needles and similar implements in public spaces.

McCarthy's district includes Readville, where a 7-year-old girl was pricked by a discarded needle at Iacono Playground last month. Read more.

CSX locomotives at the Readville yard

With so many rail lines converging and all these old-fashioned trestles, Readville's the best place in Boston to see all manner of commuter-rail and Amtrak trains. And with what could be the last rail yard in the city limits (Ed. note: Somebody correct me if I'm wrong), it's also the best place to see freight trains. This afternoon, these two locomotives pushed a series of freight cars into the Readville yard, just past Readville station on the Fairmount Line.

Goats in Hyde Park

The poison-ivy-eating goats are back in Hyde Park, chomping away at the underbrush in the urban wild at the end of West Street. Well, except when they've had their fill or it's just too hot and they take a break, as they were doing around 4:30 p.m.

CDs on a fence at the Fairmount commuter-rail station in Hyde Park

Somebody's attached a whole bunch of CDs to a fence at one of the entrances to the Fairmount station on the Fairmount line (on Fairmount Avenue, of course).

Artst at work at the Martini Shell in Hyde Park

Save Our Streets and the Hyde Park Arts Association held their annual arts festival at the Martini Shell on Truman Parkway today. In the afternoon, local artists duked it out during a Battle of the Arts - they had three hours to paint a prize-winning work.
