Last November, somebody noticed a problem with the "elbow tree," a distinctive birch tree near the Jamaica Pond boathouse with a prominent limb pointing downward at the water, rather than up - its trunk had begun to split open. That's a sign of impending death and the person attached a couple of small notebooks and a pencil to the tree both so that people could measure the crack as it spread and to say goodbye to the longtime pondside attraction. The Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council's Public Service Committee says the neighborhood needs more trash receptacle along Centre Street and the north side of Jamaica Pond because of slobs who can't hold onto their trash until they find one or get home, the Jamaica Plain Gazette reports.

Washington Pearson, 55, of Lynn, had bail set at $250,000 today on charges related to an Oct. 24 home invasion on the Arborway in Jamaica Plain, in which he used a large flat-head screwdriver to break into a woman's home and rob, strangle and rape her, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports. The Boston City Archives posted a couple of photos of the aftermath of a crash at the Forest Hills elevated station on Dec. 4, 1921, when the last car of a train derailed, causing one train car to fall to the street - narrowly missing a streetcar. No deaths or injuries, unlike a derailment on the el at Beech Street and Harrison Avenue seven years later that killed two and injured several more.
Boston Police report officers responding to a report of gunfire on Gay Head Street in Jamaica Plain Tuesday night wound up arresting a 14-year-old from Roslindale and a 16-year-old from Roxbury on unrelated outstanding warrants. Read more.
Boston Police report that Washington Pearson, 55, wanted for breaking into a residence on the Arborway in Jamaica Plain on Oct. 24 and then trying to rape and kill its occupant, was arrested Tuesday in Norfolk, VA. Read more.
