The Harvest Co-op's lease on its South Street location ends on Feb. 28. Although board members are continuing to negotiate with their landlord, there's a chance the store could close, forcing members to journey to the newer Harvest on Washington Street on the JP/Roslindale line.

The co-op board meets on Jan. 5, starting at 6 p.m., at the Cooperative Artists Institute, 311 Forest Hills St. in JP, with time set aside for members to discuss the potential shutdown.

The Jamaica Plain Gazette interviews Boston 2024 President Dan O’Connell, who says that the committee has already IDed a North Shore site (hmm, so maybe they're not so short-sighted?) in case the local city councilor comes out against shutting down Franklin Park for use by the horsey set:

If, for example, “[City Councilor] Matt O’Malley came to me and said there is no support [in his district] for using Franklin Park as a venue, we would look elsewhere” for another option, he said.

Parcel U proposal in Forest Hills

The BRA yesterday approved a 124-unit housing project on the long grassy field on Hyde Park Avenue between Ukraine Way and Tollgate Cemetery.

Urbanica, Inc., is proposing 48 townhouse condos and 76 apartments on the parcel, which once sat under the end of the elevated Orange Line. Some 44 of the units - 6 of them condos - will be marketed as "affordable." Apartments will range from studios to three-bedroom units.

Arborway to Mattapan Trolley

Transit historian and Harvard University librarian Foster Palmer narrates the trip, with a brief stopover at Barry's Ledge, once a gravel pit, then a never-was driving range.

Washington Street just south of Forest Hills

A concerned citizen complains about the way those extra parking spaces were added to Washington Street south of Forest Hills, creating a sudden swerve on an otherwise straight road:

Truck parked completely blocking bike lane because the parking spots along the side of the road are still there. Please get rid of the parking on the street in front of the harvest co-op. It is not necessary as there is a large parking lot. You are jeopardizing bicyclists lives every single day. Please make sure the mayor and Commissioner gilooly see this.

No, don't be silly, not the Globe. The Jamaica Plain Gazette opines:

It is rare that we advise saying “absolutely no” to a project. But the Olympics bid is breathtaking in its dubious assumptions, potential negative impacts, and sleight-of-hand “process.” Thus far, saying no is all that has worked. Thanks to those saying it loudly and often.

The Dig reports the Drinking Fountain on Washington Street has fired up its kitchen again, which it had shut after the city ban on indoor smoking drove away its food customers. And it's a heartwarming story, to boot.

Around 10:40 a.m. at 89 Forest Hills St. Two workers were building a third-floor rear porch when it collapsed onto the second-floor porch.

One worker died, the other was less seriously injured.

In addition to firefighters and paramedics, ISD and OSHA were also called in.

NOTE: Thanks to the city data portal, Brian Nailer was able to pull up the record on the building permit pulled for the work (attached below), which he notes used the short form, which is not supposed to be used for structural work

Graffiti on the Jamaicaway in Jamaica Pond

A concerned citizen critiques the unknown artist's recent oeuvre:

You can't be a tortured artist if you don't have talent. This person is tagging the whole neighborhood and it's really becoming a problem. Mostly because it's not good art.

The Jamaica Plain Gazette reports on an organizing meeting on Nov. 24 at the First Baptist Church in JP to plan ways to fight efforts to bring the 2024 Olympics to Boston.

Robin Jacks, one of the organizers, referred to the private organizers' plans to commandeer Franklin Park for equestrian events:

Frederick Law Olmsted did not create the crown jewel of the Emerald Necklace so billionaires could mow it down for profit.
