Roxbury, MA – It is election season for Massachusetts residents! There are so many important issues that need to be addressed. Whether it be violence in the community, education, the economy, or green energy, everyone needs to be heard. For the first time, the Young Professionals Network of the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts (YPNULEM) is hosting a series entitled “Candid Conversations”. During this series, the community has the opportunity to speak to candidates directly and learn how each candidate stands on issues that matter the most to them. All are welcome to attend.

Snapping turtle in Forest Hills Cemetery

Mike Ball reports on the different animals he saw on a walk around Forest Hills Cemetery the other day, including this snapping turtle in Lake Hibiscus:

It was pretty creepy. It came from maybe 30 feet off-shore and surfaced just below me by the tiny rocky beach. As I moved about 100 feet along the shore, it tracked me. I began to feel like it was viewing me as a two-legged fish…a snack.

Around 2:45 p.m. on Centre Street, across from the liquor store.

Police are looking for four suspects, one a woman in a long dress with orange stripes who did the stabbing and three men, one wearing a GPS ankle bracelet and a blue-and-white striped shirt.

Because of the proximity to the Orange Line station - initial reports suggested the stabbing happened near the fare gates - the T had Orange Line trains bypass Jackson Square.

Quiet Jesus Lady

She stands, litterally, in sharp contrast to Screaming Jesus Guy, who has been annoying people on the Red and Orange lines for years now.

You can find her sometimes in the lobby of the Forest Hills Orange Line station. Like the Jehovah's Witnesses, she just stands there, but instead of having a copy of the Watchtower in an outreached hand, she just holds her sign. Of late, for example, this afternoon, she's been holding court in front of the Washington-Beech housing project, right at the corner of Washington and Beech.

No more gentrification in Jamaica Plain

Outside the Galway in JP. Photo by Marc W.

Residents in areas such as Jamaica Plain and Brighton may have been pondering the new fliers showing up on utility poles advocating things such as free transit and a ban on yuppies.

They're the work of People for Democratic Revolution, which advocates a revolution (right down to troops turning their guns on their commanders if need be) to turn the US into a massive series of tiny little classless communities where all decisions are made by mutual agreement of members.

The Jamaica Plain Gazette reports a developer now has to decide whether to seek city approval of a plan to tear down a two-family house used as an office on South Street and replace it with four units after the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council's zoning committee narrowly voted to oppose the plan. Under zoning, he could put up a three-unit building; he had spent two years negotiating with neighbors.

Lines at Forest Hills on the Orange Line

Sebastian Zapata shows us the long lines at Forest Hills this morning as Orange Line riders try to add a month of value to their CharlieCards. It's not just that so many people do that as the fact that, as Kyle Geiste explains:

Weirdness on the MBTA machines at Forest Hills. Can't process credit cards. Long lines, employees tapping people through.

Emerald Ash Borer

State officials confirmed today a dread Emerald Ash Borer was found in a trap at the Arnold Arboretum earlier this month and that they are now working on a quarantine zone that would be similar to, if somewhat less strict, than the one recently lifted for Asian Longhorned Beetles.

The insect, named because of its bright green color and the way it bores into ash trees, "represents a serious threat to our ash trees,” DCR Commissioner Jack Murray said in a statement. “We are taking swift action to address the infestation, educate the public, and work to mitigate any impact an infestation could bring.”

Oliver Young reports he called 911 when he spotted a "package blinking and making noise in the bushes" around 7:50 p.m. on Sigourney Street near Robeson.

Police shut the street, the bomb squad arrived, looked around and determined it was "just a bag of alarms," he says. "Shoplifting. A bunch of them. Five or six in there."

The Boston Public Health Commission reports some mosquitoes found in Jamaica Plain tested positive for the virus earlier this week.

No human cases this summer have yet been reported of the virus, which, in otherwise healthy people, normally only causes a mild flu-like infection. Still, the commission says now's the time for residents to do their part to reduce mosquito bites and breeding:
