Suspect A man who lists St. Francis House on Boylston Street as his address was arrested yesterday on charges he began groping a woman he'd been staring at for several stops on a train heading toward Forest Hills.

According to an MBTA Transit Police report, a woman told police Abdulkadir Abbas, 29, started staring at her as soon as she got on the train at Community College. Around Mass. Ave., the woman reported, Abbas got up and sat next to her, put his hand on her right thigh and began rubbing it, moving higher until he was rubbing her genital area.

Is Mother Nature trying to tell us something? Channel 7 reports a hawk was rescued from the Jackson Square stop on the Orange Line last night, about two months after a hawk was rescued from the Andrew stop on the Red Line. And let's not forget:

Karen checks in this morning from Oak Grove:

Was about to say this was the least problematic Orange Line commute in weeks. Then the train wouldn't move.

Eric Wildman adds:

What you don't want to hear on the Orange Line: "Sorry guys, this train just won't move, you will need to use the other train."

The T reports it will be bustituting starting at 9 p.m. tonight and tomorrow because of the need to shut Science Park for elevator work.

Mr. Chairman, in lieu of my normal format, I will report to the Board about safety, service, employees, fiscal responsibility and innovation in the context of the record amounts of snow that feel in the metropolitan Boston area during the month of January.

Certainly, the last five weeks have been one of the most challenging months at the MBTA in recent memory. Between December 27th and February 2nd, the region has experienced four major storm events, sub-zero temperatures, and ever piling up snow along our rights of way, yards and parking lots.

SAFETY

Despite the increased hazards related to severe weather conditions, the MBTA was able to operate all modes of transportation and maintenance activities. During the month of January we had 52 weather-related reported employee accidents/injuries. It should be noted that these are only reported accidents and that many of which did not result in any lost time. Additionally, during January we reported 32 customer injuries of which only 2 appear to be weather related. This is significant as it demonstrates the major efforts of Engineering & Maintenance and Operations personnel in keeping platforms clear of snow and ice.

Richard Davey's effort may have intensified this morning. Needham Line rider Mike Davis tweets the signboard at his station this morning read:

Train to Boston NOT MOVING at this time.

Davey made his comments at the MBTA's monthly board meeting yesterday, in which he noted the worst commuter-rail performance in four years and "weaknesses in our fleet, particularly in our Orange and Red Line," as exposed by their performance during last month's cold snap.

Late, of course. MassDOT Secretary Jeff Mullan snapped its photo.

More photos, video of the two new locomotives undergoing inspections and testing. The T hopes to take delivery on 20 additional new diesels starting in 2013.

The Fire Department is on scene; expect delays, of course.

Wellesley Police report a 30-year-old man was hit and killed by an outbound MBTA commuter-rail train around 3:10 p.m.

The train was slowing on approach to the Wellesley Farms Station when a male party crossed the tracks in front of the train. There were approximately 125 passengers on the train at the time of the incident.

Detectives from the Wellesley Police Department, MBTA Transit Police Department, and the Massachusetts State Police are conducting an investigation. The preliminary investigation shows no signs of foul play.

The Globe reports commuter-rail performance is at its worst in three years. Sure, you can blame the weather and antique equipment, but an MBCR honcho is quoted as saying, yeah, they could do better.

Meanwhile, things aren't looking all that rosy on the subways, either. Yesterday, Brian Fluharty posted this chart of Green Line performance, as based on delay alerts sent out by the T:

Richard Davey tells Jon Keller people are willing to accept the T's running antiquated trains if the T does a good enough job informing them about the reasons for delays; says some T workers seem to forget they're ultimately dealing with people, not steel containers on wheels.

Mark Renouf reports he was late to work because a Comcast contractor blocked traffic on Avon Street in Somerville with his truck:

MBTA Bus route #85. [Contractor] was outside when the bus came by, the driver asked him to move it, he said no and went inside the house he was working at. He finally moved it after coming out to his truck and the bus driver asked again. Sat there for ~15min.

Delays again this morning: Dead trains, dead signals, but, hey, at least no live snakes.

Ditto for the Newburyport/Rockport and Needham commuter-rail lines.

By adamg - 2/3/11 - 8:56 pm

MBTA Transit Police tweet workers on the Red Line found Penelope, so it's safe to put your feet down on the train again (or stop worrying whether ceiling snake is watching you).

MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo says a rider spotted the snake this morning. Tonight, Red Line train attendant Sharon Lynch, "a pet snake owner herself," managed to snare Penelope, who is being returned to her owner tonight.

Signal problems at Charles/MGH and a dead train at Forest Hills mean riders should "expect delays," the T reports.

Charles Francis sighs:

The Orange Line is a seething ball of angst hurtling into the darkness. More than usual.

By adamg - 2/3/11 - 10:55 am

Matt O'Malley tweets somebody was singing Christmas carols on the Orange Line this morning.

Meanwhile, out in Wellesley, California import John Halamka explains how he's become a five-tool snow shoveler.

By adamg - 2/3/11 - 8:38 am

Well, not so secret anymore. The MBTA and riders report multiple dead Red Line trains on the Braintree line this morning. Inbound, of course, leading to things like schedule-conscious drivers shutting doors before everybody's gotten off at South Station.

People are getting angry. Kate Norton tweets:

Passengers on the platform and passengers on the train were yelling at and pushing each other at N. Quincy!
