US Rep. Mike Capuano reports the Federal Transit Administration has given tentative OK to the state's plans for cheaper stations and other reductions along the proposed Green Line extension from Lechmere into Somerville and Medford - but with a caveat that has to be addressed by year's end, or $1 billion in federal money could disappear and get spent in some other state: Read more.

If this were the Red Line, we'd assume this guy was just wearing a costume, but Orange Line riders are a different breed, as Jed Hresko reminds us.

You know how for years the T and everybody who studied the T said the system is so far behind repairs that they couldn't even figure out just how many billions of dollars it needed? CommonWealth has a depressing little article that came out Friday - even as legislators were talking about T-related tax hikes after the Orange Line's smokeageddon - that basically has top T and state transportation leaders saying they don't actually want more money because they wouldn't know how to spend it.

Oh, and a reminder for Orange Line riders riding in rusting trains on tracks that catch fire: That 2018 date for delivery of the new Chinese trains - assuming there are no delays by the company that has never built for the US market in a factory that's still under construction - is just for the first test cars. The current 1980's fleet won't be fully replaced until 2022, again, assuming nothing goes wrong.

WGBH reports yesterday's Back Bay smoketastrophe has gotten legislators to thinking about taxes.

WFXT, meanwhile, reports the reason the driver couldn't open the doors all at once was because the train was not fully in the station - and that the T is sending him to reeducation because he should have gotten on the PA and told riders he was going to have to open each door individually.

Mainebiz reports the Maine Military Authority has laid off the 35 workers who were supposed to be rehabbing MBTA buses because for some reason the T doesn't want to pay more for the work just because the authority screwed up and lowballed itself on its $19-million bid.
