John describes the best performance art ever, this morning on the Red Line at Harvard Square, involving a woman, make-up, a felt-tip marker, a bicycle helmet and Rollerblades. Oh, and the up escalator.

A fire broke out under the tracks at Charles/MGH station on the Red Line at around 8pm this evening. As of 9:20pm, the second alarm has been called in, the third rail shut down, trains near the station evacuated and shuttle bus service has begun.

Expect disruptions to last through the end of service on 5/1.

EDIT: Red Line service was restored at 10:49pm.

EnuhCorK reports on some verbal fisticuffs between the driver of a crowded T bus and people trying to get on the bus with luggage - none of which would have happened had not the bus before been cancelled, natch.

After several years as a Green Line rider, Amy begins to get used to life on the Red Line:

... Once I get used to the toilets flushing the other way on the other side of the river, I think I'll be happy there.

Dernier is glad the T is rebuilding the Arlington Street station, but wishes they'd do something about the ditch there filling up with gross water and about the fact that there are no hot construction workers there.

T ride from hell for one woman, from Government Center to North Station.

Susie reports that her Green Line driver rang his trolley bell almost continuously on the ride outbound:

... He said, to no one in particular, "When I was a kid, I always wanted to ring the bell and I couldn't. Now I'm 31 and I can ring the bell all I want!" and ring the bell he did. I'm happy for him that he can ring the bell whenever he wants to ring the bell, but it made for a pretty annoying ride home. ...

She also discusses an annoying pause in the new announcements for what used to be Hynes/ICA.

Seems like for the first time in like 50 years, the MBTA wasn't lying when it said a trolley line was only shut down for repairs. How else to explain how the T is spending $1.1 million on air conditioning for trolleys on the Mattapan line - which is due to go back in service in November?

SrSpaceMonkey reports that he was on a Red Line train approaching Park Street when the conductor announced the stop twice - first in standard English, then in Boston English.

Jennifer Stewart was on the Orange Line headed toward Back Bay today, when she heard two loud bangs and then the lights flickered on and off and the train just stopped:

... I turned my head to the left, as if there was a snowball's chance in hell of me seeing anything that would explain the commotion, and saw....smoke.

Without any reform to do something about its debt payments (which now cost more than the system takes in via fares), the answer is yes, John Daley writes.

Tape watches it all unfold as some black kid listening to rap on his headphones is basically ordered off the train at South Station:

... After looking confusedly at the scene for another 5-10 seconds, the T guy leans into the car and says to the rapping kid, "Excuse me! You know the train is stopped because of you, right? You're holding up the train and making all these people late for work."

"No, I didn't know that."

"Well, it is. I got a complaint that you were threatening someone."

Well, maybe they'll eventually figure it out. Landed in Swampscott reports the single ticket machine at the MBTA's Science Park stop has been broken for two days:

... It was priceless today as I saw someone fighting with the ticket machine only to realize that the line of people in front of me were walking through for free. ...

EnuhCorK reports from Back Bay station:

... Two people were handing out free energy drinks. It's called Shift and it's produced by Stonyfield Farms. It's a yogurt-based drink, but lighter. The Power Punch version has a strong cherry aroma and taste and according to the label, it also has açaí puree and organic ginseng in it.

Unfortunately, I don't feel energized. I think I will go get my coffee now.

The T Riders Union (TRU), a public transit riders advocacy group, is holding a rally in front of the State House tomorrow to protest the T's ballooning debt that keeps shoveling the burden onto riders in the form of 3 fare hikes in 6 years.

Riders calling for the State legislature to pass MBTA debt relief legislation and will be joined by co-sponsors of the bill (Representatives Carl Sciortino, Liz Malia, and Brian Wallace.)

It'll be a fun rally complete with political theatre and a rider being "crushed" by a massive weight with "MBTA debt" written on the sides.

Effective immediately, please have your copywriters consider what vandals might do to your ads before submitting them to the MBTA (checking your grammar might also be a good idea):

She said head, huh huh

Spotted on the Orange Line.

One might get the sense that Tim McIntire is getting a bit tired of LaRouchies accosting him, this time about "Al Gore's Cult of Genocide:"

... I'm declaring a Stage 9 Douchebag Alert for Back Bay station until further notice. ...

Mike Mennonno reports on fending off a piss drunk crazy guy who, despite having the entire front third of the car to himself, still got up and started to lunge at some woman.

By adamg - 4/13/07 - 8:39 am

When you read stuff like this, your assumption would be that the first places to get MBTA buses with surveillance cameras would be neighborhoods where, oh, people get shot on T buses.

Zolok notices:

A brief case toting, dignified, nigh lawyerly looking young woman wearing a stylish black over coat, black nylons and white galoshes decorated with multicolored polka dots. ...
