He says selfish Beacon Hill needs to suck it up

Aaron Read writes that Beacon Hill denizens threatening to chain themselves to trees to protect the Esplanade will be the same ones screaming if they win and traffic diverted from the closed Storrow tunnel winds up on their streets:

... The ultimate costs to business, the state and to ourselves could well run into the billions (if the Esplanade bypass isn't built). I don't know what the exact number is, but the Patrick administration bettter figure that out quick because I'm willing to bet it's a helluva lot more than the entire construction project will cost.

And someone ought to remind those selfish SOB "Beautiful People" on Beacon Hill to think of the entire state a little more, instead of only themselves.

Do People in Western MA like Paying for this Mess?

While it would be most precious if Paris Hilton burned off her community service sentence tied to a tree, I get really annoyed when I hear "but my lazy car addled commuter self just KNOWS that others like me will cost the state Gabillions if this isn't done".

Oh really. If we had some real useful regional planning WITH TEETH around here, we might have some idea about exactly HOW MUCH it would cost for various options ... including shutting the sewer down permanently, of course.

But no, we have twenty different little fifedoms with different road schemes and none of the overarching sense of "what is needed where, how much will it cost, and is it worth it to try something else". Not so much as a framework - planning pages that talk about improving bike access are nice, but the regional planning entities should be able to grab the pike, the dcr and Mass Highway and the MBTA by the throat and say "HERE IS THE NEEDS ANALYSIS, THIS IS THE PLAN AND YOU MUST USE THE PROPER FRAMEWORK FOR EVALUATING ALTERNATIVES" not "come to our bike social and hear all about bikes!".

All this reactive bullshit is getting me down. At least I'm going to be sleeping in another city tonight, far far away.
