Dorchester man indicted for incident that ended with him and a Boston cop shot

Antonio Franklin, 21, faces trial on a series of charges related to a May 23 incident in Dorchester that ended with him being shot by a state trooper, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.

According to the DA's office, Franklin shot at officers attempting to stop him after he fled police conducting a gang sweep. He missed; A state-police officer fired back and his bullet went through Franklin and was possibly the one that hit Boston officer Steven Romano.

Officers patrolling the area were aware of an ongoing feud between associates of the rival Crown Path and Geneva/Castlegate gangs. Just prior to the incident, they approached an individual with whom Franklin was traveling and whom they believed to be a Geneva/Castlegate associate headed into Crown Path territory. Shortly after Franklin observed the officers speaking with that man, Franklin pedaled away from the scene on a bicycle. Officers then made efforts to speak with Franklin and, upon Romano exiting his vehicle, he abruptly changed direction and fled down Westville Street. Romano pursued on foot, and the trooper pursued both the officer and the suspect in an unmarked vehicle.
