Downtown Crossing a "Ghost Town"
Coming up from RI to visit Boston this weekend, I couldn't help but notice the tumbleweeds churning their way down Washington Street past Downtown Crossing (Summer St.).
Filenes boarded up, the Basement abandoned, and on and on it goes with a vacant Barnes and Noble, the disappearing Foot Action, and more and more empty storefronts to haunt tourists.
So Sad. No reason to go to Downtown anymore. Guess visitors only have the hyped up and tourist trap Quincy Market to head to. What happened to Boston in the last decade since I worked in a vibrant and exciting downtown?
Downtown has moved ...
... to the Back Bay -- Newbury Street, Boylston Street, Copley Square, and the Prudential. That area has really become the locus of central Boston shopping, for both residents and tourists. If you want a Barnes & Noble, you'll find a big new one at the Pru, and another at Kenmore Square. Filene's Basement has also opened a new store near Copley, though it's nothing like the downtown one was.
(Foot Action is closing, too? Good lord...)
