Steam pipe explodes in Financial District

Oh, joy: The pipe, covered with asbestos, showered brown sludge on four people, who had to wait for a hazmat team to arrive and decontaminate them before they could be taken to the hospital.

The Herald has more on the 11:45 a.m. explosion.

The Globe reports a number of downtown streets were shut.

Ouch. That's a very busy and popular bus stop

If this had happened during evening rush hour, it would have been disastrous. All of the Turnpike express buses pick up passengers there, as do the #7 to Southie and a couple other express buses to Salem and Marblehead.

According to the Herald:

A building that houses a mexican restaurant, the Conservation Law Foundation and a truck parked nearby was also covered in the sludge.

Um, I don't think this is going to be a simple "offer them what we think they should take" situation.

A bloody miracle that more people weren't headed out to lunch, too!
