MIT to help pay for cleanup of the sodiumized boat

Makes $6,000 donation toward the cost of cleaning up the cleanup boat on which volunteers and EMTs suffered burns from some sodium floating in the Charles.

Julia Reischel at the Dig has more.

The student paper at MIT, the Tech, weighs in, says while the sodium may not have come from the annual big Sodium Drop, it might have come from one of the MIT fraternities along the Charles in Boston, says MIT should go easy on perps to make them come forward, but that in any case, MIT should help out with the boat and burn victims.

Sodiumized

"Sodiumize" wasn't in my vocabulary before today, but it sure as hell is now!
"Could someone pass the salt? I need to sodiumize my potato".
"Where's the soy sauce? I'm ready to sodiumize"!
"I'm afraid all this sodiumizing is raising my blood pressure".

So much Sodiumy and Sodiumization going on - even in boats on the Charles!! - must be the fault of Gay Marriage, of course!;-)

I was one who called for MIT to bite the bullet on this one when adamg posted the previous story about how they "were investigating" and how the costs were mounting for the boat and volunteers.

Kudos to MIT for doing the right thing. Hopefully this $6k (a pittance to MIT) will help get the workers the care they need and the boat any repairs it needs as well as cover the costs of the hazmat cleaning they were forced to deal with.

and you were likely wrong....

And you were likely wrong in pointing the finger at MIT. The group that does that annual "sodium drop" from MIT did it the week before. According to my sources, it looks like a frat from BU may have been responsible since they also have this "fine" tradition. I am not saying that anyone should be chucking sodium into the river, but let's not be so damn sure of ourselves when you don't really know and are only assuming.

more likely an MIT fraternity

The fraternity houses along Beacon Street and Bay State Road in Boston belong to MIT, not BU.

The money MIT paid to help

By Anonymous (not verified) | Tue, 10/02/2007 - 11:12am

The money MIT paid to help clean the boat WAS a pathetic sum if their students are in anyway responsible for this ridiculous situation. Two people landed in the hospital, and one of them just got skin grafts. Grafts are not fun, or inexpensive. The $500 that was left over from the $5,500 decontamination bill is hardly enough to cover the pain and inconvenience both parties needed to deal with as a result of a irresponsible action.
I hope this situation doesn't get swept under the rug.
