Why does the brand-spanking new Charles Street T stop only have an up escalator?
It suddenly became more than an academic question for Psipsina yesterday when she had to figure out how to get to work while suffering some intense pain from a weekend hike:
... I could barely manage the stairs in my house. I had to decide between getting off at an elevated T station where I would have to take the stairs down (no down escalator! shame on the MBTA) and walk a half mile, or getting off at an underground T station that has no escalators at all and no elevators, and climbing two flights of stairs before walking a block. Neither appealed; I did the former. ...

Charles station does have an elevator
so I wonder why the original poster didn't use it. (The Americans with Disabilities Act requires an elevator; it does not require an escalator.)
Elevator
I'm pretty sure Charles/MGH has an elevator that you can use if you can't walk down stairs.
Installing a single
Installing a single escalator is SOP for the MBTA. Spend some time on the Southwest Corridor or the Green Line, and you'll see it everywhere.
Space constraints often dictate what stations have, and having one up escalator is better than having one down escalator.
Charles has an elevator. I
Charles has an elevator. I have seen it.
ruggles on the orange line
ruggles on the orange line has 2 up-escalators, but none going down.
