What kind of idiot lets a tiny puppy walk up an escalator?

On the way to the Maroon 5 concert at the Garden, Susie comes upon a crowd of people by the escalators in North Station:

... When we stopped and looked, we realized that a little puppy was stuck in the escalator! It was a little Pomeranian-like dog whose paw somehow got stuck at the top. People were freaking out because help was taking a long time to arrive and the poor dog couldn't get loose. Finally a bunch of Boston police came, followed by a ton of Boston firemen with axes. Honestly, there were about 15 T workers, cops, and firemen just standing around trying to figure out what to do. The firemen were using their axes to try and pry the escalator apart, but it just wasn't working. Finally they brought some "machinery" to basically cut away the teeth of the escalator and break the escalator apart. The poor dog was actually pretty calm, aside from the occasional heart-wrenching screeching crying sound it made. ...

The idea that anybody would allow a small puppy, much less any other animal for that matter, onto an escalator in the first place is beyond belief!! The person who allowed that puppy on the escalator in the first place ought to have his/her head examined!! It's by the grace of heaven above that the puppy wasn't badly hurt or killed.

Its just wrong on so many levels.

The puppy should be removed for its own safety but also to protect US from this moron.

Not to make it all about cash... but can you imagine the cost involved in this rescue? The emergency personnel salary and the cost to fix the escalator has to be in the thousands. This idiot should have to pay those costs out of pocket but somehow I bet they will try to sue!

Is this some little girlie who thinks she is Paris Hilton or perhaps Britney Spears? The future women of America have no role models but these idiots. Am I allowed to bring my german shepard to the Bruins game? Why the hell is a dog allowed in the Garden? The Hills, Sunset Tan, Real World.....all this crap is what America is seeing? Stupidity! My nine year old niece dresses like a street walker, and so does her Mom! Bring back Leave It To Beaver.

This escalator is in the subway station, not in the Garden itself.

I've seen dogs on buses and on trains, but I don't think it's a good idea to put them down. If it will hang out in a handbag, not make noise or trouble, etc. okay, maybe.

On the other hand, the paws of a tiny dog are not that much different in size than on a larger dog. Do these escallators pose a hazard to working service (e.g. seeing eye) dogs? If so, it is a problem that should be fixed.

You mean totally reinvent the escalator?

The T has had a longstanding problem with escallators eating small child feet. So far, they have chosen to settle the lawsuits and pay for the damages (hospital amputations, stitches, etc.) rather than FIX the problem of excessive gaps with appropriate guards and address the too-long maintenance intervals that contribute to excessive wear and larger spaces to get caught in.

Swirlygirl, I usually ignore your nonsensical comments, but can you even begin to substantiate your claim that the T has eaten numerous children's' feet?

Wanna save your skin boy?
You wanna save your hide?
You wanna see tomorrow? (Ha-Ha!)
You better step aside.
Better take a tip boy.
Want some good advice?
Ya better take it easy,
'Cause you're walkin' on thin ice.

Ya don't know what you're dealin' with.
No, you never did.
Ya don't know what you're lookin' at,
But that's tough titty, kid!

The Lion don't sleep tonight,
And if you pull his tail, he roars.
Ya say, "That ain't fair?"
Ya say, "That ain't nice?"
Ya know what I say? "Up yours!"

Watch me now!
I'm just a mean green mother escalator from outer space
And I'm bad.

I can't really speak to this, as I know nothing about escalators aside from accessibility requirements, but a quick google search of [MBTA escalator] brought up a page full of stories about amputations and stranglations. No idea whether this is more than any other network of escalators, but it took me all of 5 seconds to find that, yes, MBTA escalators appear to have maimed a lot of people.

never hurt me, but it did once bite off the front of a boot I was wearing. Another time, I saw a woman whose pant or long skirt was caught in an escalator; I had to rip it out of the (stopped) escalator before she could move. Still another time, I saw an escalator stopped with a shoe caught in the bottom of it.

During off-peak hours, non-service dogs are allowed at the discretion of T vehicle operators. Dogs must be properly leashed and are not allowed to annoy riders or take up a seat. For safety and convenience during rush hours, small domestic animals must be carried in lap-sized containers.

It doesn't say whether they need to be in containers in the stations, or what constitutes "small."

Yeah, the paw size isn't a whole lot different, but even a human foot can also get pulled into an escalator. Service animals who've been well trained hopefully know to keep their paws away from the edges.

But what about the poor non-service animals who might get their paw caught? Ultimately it's up to dog owners to be responsible, as always.
