Revere man charged with murdering cop as officer's fiancee watched

Robert Iacoviello, 20, of Revere, was today charged with the Sept. 29 murder of Revere police officer Daniel Talbot behind Revere High School.

Iacoviello has been held on a weapons charge since Oct. 1. Derek Lodie had previously been charged as an accessory in Talbot's death.

Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley described the prosecutor's version of events - and said the investigation continues (a third man is also under investigation):

Talbot, his fiancee and three Revere police officers left Margarita's in Revere and went to the high-school bleachers, where they continued to drink until Lodie happened upon them by chance, got into an argument with Talbot, then fled - after which he called Iacoviello:

A short time later, Lodie returned to the scene. Heated words were exchanged.

Evidence suggests that Officer Talbot and Officer William Soto then began to approach Lodie. It was at that time that Iacoviello and two other young men arrived at the scene. Iacoviello was armed with a 9mm handgun.

For reasons that only he knows, Iacoviello produced his weapon and fired.

Officer Daniel Talbot, mortally wounded with a gunshot wound to the head, went down. Officer Soto discharged his weapon in response.

Talbot's fiancée and Officer Stacey Bruzzese called for help within seconds of the shooting. Revere Police responded to the scene immediately to find Officer Soto and Talbot's fiancée cradling the wounded man in their arms.

Iacoviello, Lodie, and their associates fled the scene.

Conley's complete statement, which also addresses rumors surrounding the case.

This story stinks like ya read about. Something's still not right with the whole thing. Cops are out drinking behind the high school? That happens all the time.

But this story sure stinks of something.

On the night of Sept. 28 and continuing into Sept. 29, Officer Talbot, his fiancée, and three other members of the Revere Police Department left Margarita’s, a Revere bar, and proceeded to the bleachers in the rear of Revere High School. They continued to drink beer and socialize there.

Maybe it's a Revere thing. But I honestly cannot see a bunch of armed off-duty cops going to drink beer on the bleachers behind a high school as normal. If people who were not cops did this, it would probably be actively discouraged by the police, as it is illegal. I've been arrested for less.

First and foremost, we have developed no credible evidence that Officer Talbot or any other member of his group was engaged in any illicit activity at all behind the high school beyond the minor infraction of drinking in public.

The minor infraction of drinking in public... How about the minor infraction of trespassing? The minor infraction of carrying arms on school grounds? Certainly too minor for the officers involved in these crimes to be charged with them, you know, seeing as how they were officers and all. But if anybody were to say a bunch of civilians who were drinking out behind the HS and provoked a fight that ended up with one dead would get off with no charges, I'd be likely to doubt it.

Okay, anyway so we have a bunch of off-duty cops hanging out drinking behind the high school. I guess that's normal in Revere. And then what happens?

By pure chance, another man was present in that area at the time. Derek Lodie, already charged as an accessory before the fact to Officer Talbot’s homicide, was cutting through the field when he happened upon the officers.

By pure chance, of course. This fellow was cutting across the field. Hey, that sounds normal to me. And what does he find? A bunch of guys out there breaking the law and drinking out on the bleachers like a bunch of shifty-eyed teenagers.

There's probably no way to know that the miscreants are actually cops. Obviously the prudent thing to do would be to keep going and ignore them. A bunch of drunks in the dark behind the high school? Keep walking. But no...

The evidence suggests that Officer Talbot and his party exchanged words during a confrontation with Lodie, who left the scene through a hole in a nearby fence. Lodie called Iacoviello, orchestrating the confrontation that would follow.

Golly, I'd sure like to know what those words are. Perhaps some of them were "Hey, you guys can't drink back here; that's illegal. You better split or I'll call the cops." And perhaps more of them were "Fuck you. We are the cops." Or maybe the words were "Hey, these bleachers are where my gang of miscreants goes to drink beer," and "Well, we're the new miscreants around here."

But in any case, if you're having a drunken argument with a purely by chance stranger behind a high school at night, it's great to be a cop with a gun. Because I'd be very unlikely to act like this:

Evidence suggests that Officer Talbot and Officer William Soto then began to approach Lodie.

It's always better to go at a fellow two on one. Especially if you're drunk and armed, because drunk people can't shoot for shit.

What might have transpired between the drunk law-breaking cops and the purely by chance stranger is unknown, because...

It was at that time that Iacoviello and two other young men arrived at the scene. Iacoviello was armed with a 9mm handgun.

For reasons that only he knows, Iacoviello produced his weapon and fired.

We don't know exactly what the reasons were, and I kind of bet we never will. Part of why is that this press report includes identifiable bullshit.

State Police were notified promptly after the shooting. They took over the investigation because, as District Attorney, I have designated them to investigate all homicides in the City of Revere. It is no slight to the officers present for the shooting, who, frankly, were emotionally devastated. Their statements and recollections at the scene were more important to the investigation than their efforts out in the field would have been.

Oh, sure. It couldn't have been because those officers present at the scene were fucking drunk, now could it have been? It wouldn't be because there was no way you could have let them drive a car after getting blotto on the bleachers. Or perhaps it was important to get their recollections pronto because they wouldn't remember it too well in the morning.

Hey, no slight on the officers intended here. But face facts: if civilians got themselves into something like this, they'd be charged with at least those crimes they actually committed. They wouldn't be able spend weeks hiding behind a blue wall of "the very sensitive nature of this investigation..." refusing to explain what they were doing there at 2 AM. This event is a black eye for the Revere police, who appear to have misunderstood that "gang unit" is supposed to mean police who crack down on gangs, not police who act like gangs.

Please dont misunderstand me ! My sympathy goes out to that officer's fiancee and his family for there is no reason anyone to settle a situtation using weapons.

With that being said. I have to say as middle age woman as myself. Never been in trouble with the law. A mother of four teenagers childern plus legal guardian of my eight year old nephew. I experience the most horrifing situtation harrasment from a Revere Police office this past week. The indivuals that arrived at the scene to assist all made my husband and I feel as if we were criminals. I have to say I will never look a a Revere Police officer the same again after that night.

totally agree with you i am sure it was one of officer talbots fellow officers. Funny no one identifies "cop shot" when the call goes in? Where is evan franklin? I can tell ya where his fiancee is...with officer soto nice friend!!!!!! His fiancee has to live with knowing that a "thug" didnt do it. Granted bobby isn't a choir boy but neither are any of revere's young cops. Too bad this kid has to go to jail for this senseless crime, I hope that they realize this soon and set him free.

I went to high school with Bobby and I talked to him after the incident He told me he took the blame for someone else and that he didnt do it. It is sad that just because he has a record he went down for something a bunch of revere pigs did.
