Dorchester's Giant Grinch Head

Mike Mennonno goes back to his old Dot haunts and writes up everything from the new Everett Square flagpole to the Newmarket Industrial District (formerly the "Nameless Void of Urban Negation") to the sculpture that's supposed to be a Clapp pear at Columbia Road and Mass. Ave.

... The amazing thing about the Grinch Head is that no matter where you view it from it's always the back of his head. Like those paintings with eyes that follow you everywhere. ...

Anyone who takes time to write about Edward Everet Square is okay in my book. Ah, for the days when the KFC still had bullet proof glass 2-feet thick. I love the pear but agree it could be mistaken for the Grinch. They should have put back the rotary that used to be there (long long ago) instead of just sprucing up the sidewalks, but I still like it.

As for New Market, that's been its name since Kevin White moved the merchants out of Quincy Market (i.e. the old market) in the 70s to turn Quincy Market into what it is and prevent is being torn down (no, seriously) by "progress." Hay market downtown is all that remains of the old market. The new market is much more suited to its purpose but with much less (no) charm.
