This is what Rozzie Square has been waiting for?

Tom Nealon at Pazzo Books relays the news that that fancy-shmancy Newbury-Streetish shoe store on Corinth Street is being replaced by a (drum roll) cell-phone store:

... Looks pretty nice, I guess, though I've long had a theory that the desirability of a neighborhood is inversely proportional to the number of cell phone joints. ...

But at least it looks good. Was hoping for something groovy -- though maybe not quite as pricey as those shoes sure were. But maybe nothing cool can afford the rent without selling goods at $150 a pair.

Only now they have cellphone boxes hanging where the high heels used to be.

It's at least the fifth place in Roslindale Square that sells cell phones now.

then I have a hard time imagining what sort of business could be viable in those tiny storefronts apart from real estate or insurance or some other kind of boring two-desk operation. I miss Zia, but who would dare?

Now that big place across the way... the place that for years had the same 19 identical cheezy couches for sale in it... that place has possibilities!

I hate slick-looking shops.....too bad about the new phone store. I guess it's better than nothing, however. Zia was too pricey, it really didn't fit, either. Bottom line is, the landlords are too greedy. What a shame.

The fact that yet another cell phone store is going in, and that it is a big national chain store, suggests that the rents in the villiage are out of touch with the people who want to shop there. Roslindale is still at the funky point (that's why I like it). Thrift stores mixed with high end restaurants, mixed with cheese shops, mixed with laundromats. Funky. Its past the low budget point but not quite to the Newbury point. Bowling alley - actually a good idea mixed with coffee and cocktails. The landlords either have invested so much in improvements that they need to charge rent at the high end (or to stupid chains that will pay whatever) or they went from low end to high end and missed funky. Get funky. Maybe Main Streets should teach a funky class. Get the people from Georfrey's, they understand and they will feed you delicious doughnut muffins while they preach. As for shoes, forget Payless and forget Nieman's - try Dansko's and Naots. My wife alone will keep you in business. Restaurants/snack places -how about some god damn crepes? Or coffee places: do I have to sing the yuppie anthem for you to notice that I'm thirsty? So thirsty.

I for one am so sick of looking at empty store fronts. Good for the phone store it at least looks presentable. I will cross my fingers for a trader joes to replace jax. It is really sad to drive down birch street and see only 2 store fronts occupied and three empty

No more parking on Popular Street (with fornax, village sushi, Solera)

and work on getting occupancy into all of those store fronts,

I agree, I hate to sound like a yuppie but wouldn't mind seeing a starbucks on birch street, and a few more restaraunts.

If the vacancies continue like this, Roslindale ma never turn the corner
