Are all single people this vapid?

TJIC is left to wonder after reading this paean to the single life in the Globe.

DOWN with this bullshit trend of publishing crap stories about crap sociology studies, just because they line up nicely with some overworked editor's intuitive sense of what inane suburban jackasses tend to believe about themselves unaided by evidence or critical thinking.

I know it's just a crap magazine feature. But since when does a newspaper not care whether or not something's true?

Shameless Self Promotion

In answer the question, No. And for a year's worth of non-vapid Deep Thought on the single life, read my blog. There's thrills, there's chills, there's a sweet relationship with a grad student at Harvard that didn't actually go anywhere, there's brainy essays and, more recently, a lot of stuff on the Red Baron.

Not to get in the way of

Not to get in the way of anyone's righteous indignation, but I believe the tone of the article was meant to be lighthearted and silly. I also find it kind of amazing that anyone was looking for hard journalism on the back page of the Globe Magazine, but whatever.

Public Notice

By Jay Levitt | Sun, 11/18/2007 - 10:24pm

As a courtesy to our readers, this comment on this comment section of this weblog, or "blog", issues* a bi-annual reminder at the beginning and end of Daylight Saving Time. This year, in the United States, the Energy Policy Act of 2005 extended the end of Daylight Saving Time until 2:00 am on the first Sunday of November.

Daylight Saving Time will take effect once again late this winter, at 2:00 am on the second Sunday in March. Until then, the American federal, state and local governments will base official business NOT on Daylight Saving Time, but on Daylight Squandering time.

IMPORTANT: Normally, we base acronyms on the first three letters of the words involved, such that Daylight Saving Time is abbreviated as DST. This year, however, due to the new schedule, Daylight Squandering Time also abbreviates as DST. Thus, we will be changing the acronym to use the LAST letter of the MIDDLE word to avoid any confusion. Think you've got it figured out? Wait for the launch of our new chronacronymometer, in limited beta next week, and test your skillz.

Meanwhile, now that we have officially switched to Daylight Squandering Time, we, the community of people who create weblogs (or "blogs") urge you to go around your apartment, with pen and paper in hand, and make a list of any devices that use digital clocks. Come back to your desk, and now scratch off any of those devices that don't also transmit humor.

The remaining list is your "Squander Guard" list. When interacting with any remaining humor-chronometry hybrids on that list, be certain that your irony calibration meter is at or near its peak performance (37 Qg/s per j^2). There are commercial shops who will calibrate for you, but you can do it at hope for much less: Find a copy of "Waiting for Guffman" on cable or NetFlix. During the scene where David Cross is explaining the probability of weather in a field, your ICM should read either infinity (older models) or infinity plus one (younger, brattier models).

Until this calibration is complete, do NOT attempt to visit any sites that may contain humor if you are using a device containing a clock. You *may* be able to access such sites if your internal system clock is still on Daylight Saving Time. But if you are personally aware that the "true" time is Daylight Squander, your knowledge will conflict with the system clock, and eddies in the space-time continuum can occur.

In short: We apologize for the inconvenience. We apologize for the time change. We apologize for the now-additional calibration step you must take in a post-9/11 world. We would apologize for the increased risk you face in becoming a low-resistance ground plane for sites with high ironic potential, but this is not a risk our umbrella policy covers. So be safe, be smart - and enjoy the Internet! It's keen, kids!

* Technically, this policy applies only during the Saving<->Squandering and Squandering<->Saving cutover. However, due to technical limitiations in the blog software, the entry may be available to read at other times of the year. This comment section, and in particular this comment, make no warranties, express or implied, about the safety and effectiveness of the recalibration procedure, or of time itself and the direction it may or may not flow in. We believe these procedures to be safe when used as directed by a certified time director. Otherwise, use time at your own risk. Continue to exist - but continue to exist responsibly.

HAHAHAHA. I don't think anybody else on this whole thread has read the article and gets it. Jay, I'll go on a date with you any day and thereby minimalize my social usefulness, I'm serious. :)

Personal to S.G.
