40 potential mayoral candidates

David Bernstein lists and rates their odds against another presumed Menino re-election bid in 2009. Interesting article, but the Phoenix really needs to find a photo of Michael Flaherty taken sometime more recently than 1983. Also: Joe Kennedy for mayor? Does the guy even live in Boston anymore? And even if he does, ugh, enough's enough with him and his presumed right to whatever office somebody thinks he's running for.

The genius with using an old (and dare I say more-flattering) photograph is that it's not INACCURATE or wrong, per se, to use it... it's just truth by way of editorial discretion...? Haha, one wonders if the photo desk really doesn't have a more recent photograph!

What's with the Joe bashing? I don't see anyone else walking around with free heating oil!
Presumptions
If Joe Kennedy wants to run, he's got more than a presumed right to run.
If the papers are gushing over it, and presume that his last name will buy him an office, that is their problem, not Joe's problem. Do I find "the name game" in local politics - the idea (and too-often the reality) that your name gets you an office - annoying as all hell? Yes. Again, not the problem of the person who is running, but a regional disease.
Then again, if half the people Joe Kennedy has helped actually turn out to vote, is that such a bad thing?

Others were too busy bitching about the Citgo sign in Kenmore Square to help the elderly and low income families with free heating oil as Joe did.
Joe didn't help anyone.
So how do you think a guy who could barely get through college went into the international oil market and got cut-rate oil? That business was set up by professionals who used the Kennedy name to get the oil at a good price from people who assumed they were dealing with Ted and couldn't say no. Joe took - and takes - the credit for political advantage. Nice guy. It's how the family works - the "fixers" do the dirty work, and the family take the credit.
