Lawyer, one-time candidate for governor, disbarred in part because of her Web site

Terry Klein, who is posting about interesting Massachusetts court cases on Decisionism, reports the Supreme Judicial Court this week upheld the disbarment of 2002 gubernatorial candidate Barbara Johnson.

In its decision, the court ruled against Johnson on three counts, including one involving her Web site, on which she posted information about a paternity and custody case in which she was a lawyer - and which she refused to take down even after a court order:

Whatever rights she may have had to "defend herself against false accusations" regarding the fee dispute, those rights did not include publishing highly sensitive personal information regarding allegations that the father had sexually abused his mentally retarded daughter.

I bet the URLs have a session ID in them and it expires after 30 minutes or whatever. Bah!

Terry Klein has posted a PDF of the decision.

BJ for Governor

That's what Barbara Johnson's web site says, anyway.

It isn't the website that was the problem

By SwirlyGrrl | Sat, 12/08/2007 - 11:42pm

It was her refusal to obey the court order to take down certain information on her website that led to her being disbarred. She could have been distributing leaflets or handbills instead of blogging, and the result would likely have been the same.

Not the media, the message.
