Cool photo of the Common and State House in the snow.

So the Globe thinks we're all a bunch of whiners who should just suck it up and grin like lunatic Chicagoans as we sit in our cars for seven hours? Steve Nadis has something to whine about (as a fellow leftie, I feel his pain).

Pink Princess thinks some Dedham snowplow operators got a bit carried away - plowing long after the streets were clear:

... I know it is a big/important job but when the plows are buzzing down the street with sparks flying out from under the blade I think it is time to call it a night. ...

David thinks Boston didn't get carried away enough on Thursday because there weren't enough cops at intersections stopping selfish jerks from causing gridlock.

That's more like it!!

Granted, traffic would've still been snarled up some, especially because the afternoon rushhour started early, but, had more cops been out there controlling the situation, the horrible, horrible gridlocking of vehicular traffic wouldn't have been prevented, but at least minimized and controlled to manageable proportions.

Last Thursday's snowstorm, while it dumped a lot of snow on us, was nothing like the Blizzard of '78, when things were much, much worse and people did have an even tougher time getting home. In a more manageable storm like the one last Thursday, there was no excuse for gridlocking being so bad that people didn't get home until 8, 9 or 10 o'clock at night. Poor management and lack of traffic cops were, indeed the big problem, I think.

I took public transportation to where I had to go, before it began snowing, and, while the T was slow enough, at least I got home at a decent hour. The only thing that really was worrisome was the possibility of being hit by an inattentive or nervous automobile driver while crossing the street(s). However, I survived...and made it home safely.

I come from Minneapolis, where they plow odd-numbered and even-numbered sides of the street on alternate days. (Minneapolis gets storms like this all the time; they know how to deal with weather and enjoy it. It's what I miss most.)

Anyway. A couple from Texas moves to Minneapolis, and, during their first winter there, it starts to snow. And snow. And snow. They turn on the radio, and the announcer says, "There is a snow emergency in Minneapolis, and it is ODD SIDE plowing day. Please park on the EVEN SIDE of the street." Okay, says the husband, I'll go move the car.

The next morning, they turn on the radio to hear, "The snow emergency continues, and it is EVEN SIDE plowing day. Please park on the ODD SIDE of the street." The wife sighs and says, fine, fine, I'll go move the car.
