Police impersonator on the loose in Cambridge

Cambridge Police report on an incident on Fifth Street around 1:40 p.m. on Jan. 4:

Victim was walking on Fifth St when he was approached by a suspect (male, Asian/Pacific Islander, driving a black four-door sedan). The suspect identified himself as a police officer, showing a badge. The victim observed a firearm holstered on the suspect's side. The suspect performed a pat-frisk and took the victim's wallet, then ordered him to go home and retrieve his passport, with the suspect following. When the victim came downstairs with his passport, the suspect was gone.

Cambridge Police also report somebody tried robbing a Harvard student shortly after 11 p.m. on Jan 5 at Mill and Plympton streets:

When she turned away, he grabbed her by the ponytail and took her purse, hitting her in the face several times.

The victim describes the suspect as a white male, 40-50 y.o., 6’3 with a gray beard and long dark hair hanging out from a dark gray knit cap. The suspect was wearing a dark green/gray puffy, waist-length jacket with duct tape on the shoulder and dirty blue jeans.

It's sad that someone ordered to hand over his wallet and then go home to retrieve his passport, even by a real cop, would simply comply without question. But that's life in modern America.
