They're not just statistics when you hear the sirens all the time

Brian Foust lives in a part of Dorchester where violence is endemic:

Many nights I hear sirens in the neighborhood. The other night a helicopter circled my neighborhood for half an hour. The crime and violence here is palpable. ...

I know one of the people who was shot this year. A teenage boy who was shot in the face after having an argument with another boy at school. .. What can we do to stop the spreading of guns and violence in our city.

Relax, those helicopters were hovering over the fire on Emerson St in South Boston, Doug Meehan signalled me with a hand held mirror he was admiring himself with.

The choppers pass by semi-regularly, but this was excessive.

The Police

What people can do to stop the spread of guns and violence in the City is talk to the police, whether openly or anonymously. Crimes don't get solved, and criminals don't get pulled off the street before they commit more crimes, by cops with good hunches. It happens when someone, like a concerned neighbor, gives them a tip. I have been in meetings with BPD higher-ups and the AG where they estimate that most of the violence taking place in the City is attributable to as little as a few hundred bad actors (out of 500,000 people remember) against whom they are constantly trying to build a case to remove them from the environment. But the cops can't just "build a case" - they need tips, witnesses, and cooperation from the community.

cooperating with the police

I highly recommend cooperating with law enforcement.

The Code

By bostnkid | Tue, 01/08/2008 - 12:29pm

Most of these kids live by the no snitching code because for so many years the police were the enemy.Today you probably have a handful of hardcore killers running around but they set off a chain reaction.Someone gets killed and nobody tells, now someone else has to be killed.Everyone knows who the real killers are but nobody wants to be the one labeled snitch. Because of this kids that might not normally carry a gun think they have to to protect themselves from the truly scary characters in their neighborhood. Now you have some kid that may not have ever found trouble walking around with a gun in his waistband.Because its there he will use it in any kind of dispute.Even for something as silly as not knowing someone walking down a street that is considered someone elses turf.If all these kids would band together and realize theres more good kids than bad kids maybe we have a chance.Start snitching, get the real gangsters off the streets and the fear levels will drop.Once the fear levels drop the guns will not be as necessary. Whatever happened to the good old days when a dispute ended in a black eye or a fat lip? Start Snitching! It will make your lives easier and safer. Stop taking this rap music shit so seriously.Killing someone lasts forever.
