Why does one of Bernie and Phyl's kids sound like one of the Jordan's brothers?

And is there anything more pitiful than watching people unable to sing that brain-rotting jingle of theirs (at least now that people are no longer doing the Giant Glass air-guitar thing)?

Nothing sends me diving for

Nothing sends me diving for the mute button faster than that ad. Ugh.

Is Phyl Sick?

By bostnkid | Thu, 01/10/2008 - 12:18pm

It seems like they are trying to phase the kids into the commercials.I have noticed that Phyl seems to be a bit shaky. The furniture is crap.

Bernie and Phyl

By Anonymous (not verified) | Fri, 01/11/2008 - 6:26pm

My guess is that Phyl is sick, perhaps with Parkinson's Disease or a form of it. It appears that a succession plan has been in place for the two sons to take over the business. You'll notice that in the latter part of 2007, the sons appeared in commercials with their folks doing most of the talking, and now the sons appear often without the folks. This has probably been to ween the public on getting used to seeing the sons, but frankly, I think it has taken too long. With all due respect, Phyl should have been pulled from the commercials sooner. She clearly looks ill and appears to be propped in front of the camera, which detracts from the message/content that the retailer is trying to convey. Bernie and Phyl should both exit gracefully, enjoy retirement, and let their sons take over. This is the mistake many in family businesses make -- the folks don't know when to get out. The question is, do the sons have what it takes to run the business, or should outside management be brought in?

Does anybody understand this?

B+P, Jordans, and Bob's Furniture run
commercials INCESSANTLY during Red Sox
games, which has to be as expensive a
media buy as there is around here.

How does it pay off? I mean, how many
times a year does your average viewer
by a Bob-O-Matic? And if you went to
B+P's once, what would make you go back
again? (You might have to go some place
else pretty soon to replace the crap you
bought at B+P.)

What kind of margin is there in furniture
that allows them saturate the airwaves with
their smarmy ads?

And another rhing I don't get about radio advertising

By bobmetcalf | Thu, 01/10/2008 - 12:52pm

What's up with those Herb Chambers ads?

Wall-to-wall 7x24 I understand.

But what's with the laugh-announce thing,
where the announcer kind of laughs and talks
a word at the same time, about once every other sentence?

Am beginning to think I spend way too much
time listening to bad radio.

How About "Empire Today"?

By Laurence Glavin (not verified) | Thu, 01/10/2008 - 1:34pm

I don't watch or listen to sports play-by-play, but I do watch the news and cable TV, and the incessant "Empire Today" commercials are an automatic impetus to hit the 'MUTE' switch or pick another channel. The website complaintsboard.com lists 203 hits on "Empire", most commenting on the poor quality and bad service. Hey, the guy doing the installation in 80 years old....give him a break!

Even though it's a cartoon character

The Empire Today guy creeps me out. Along with the remote,
my immediate reaction is to check the local Sex
Offender Registry for his picture.

No question about it, BobMetcalf:

"bad radio."

There's no question about it, BobMetcalf: A lot of what one hears these days on the radio has gone from bad to worse. Bad would be an improvement over much of what's played on the radio nowadays, imo.

Regarding Bernie & Phyl: I remember hearing those schlocky ads on the radio all the time for quite awhile. Too bad about Phyl, but is it possible that their business really is faltering and on its last legs, maybe?

Empire Today--that's a wierd commercial, too.

That laugh-announce thing has to stop! LISTEN TO ME HERB!

By Ambidexter (not verified) | Wed, 07/22/2009 - 11:01am

Hi,

I'm waiting on hold at a Herb Chambers dealerhip's phone line now. ANd the inane ad that Herb is reading has a laugh-announce thing in it. I want to know what ad agency told him to do this!!!!!

And you're right, it's been over a year and a half since your poost and they still do the laugh announce thing. It's one thing when someone's voice lilts to announce a point, like "available _today_ only" or something. But the laugh announce drives me crasy because I can see I'm being manipulated, but I don't know what point they're trying to get across.

I hate being manipulated anyway, but when it has no purpose, other than to piss me off, I stop it.

I am considering going to the only other Mini dealer in MA, in Peabody, because I've had it with Herb!

Radio announcment "Laugh-Announce"

By KMAC (not verified) | Wed, 08/26/2009 - 11:38am

I agree with the post about Herb Chambers' "laugh-announcement" in his ads. My curiosity about that - and thus my web search, brought me to this forum.
